http://www.cracked.com/blog/the-bitter-truth-about-fighting-chronic-pain-without-opioids/

I really want to state obvious pharmacologic reasons why chronic opiate use worsens chronic pain, but I don't want to dive into the psychotic cesspool of comments.

The article writer seems to be missing the key issue of why there's an epidemic and just wants to bitch about how shitty their life is due to chronic pain.

I was prescribed Vicodin when I had my wisdom teeth removed. No request for it, had very little pain, and they handed me a piece of paper for a bunch of damned Vicodin. There is a very serious issue with doctors handing this shit out like it's candy to people who don't need it.

When I had my appendix removed, it was done via laparoscopy so I had pretty much no pain at all during recovery except for some very minor pain when getting out of / into bed, and they STILL offered a Vicodin prescription if I wanted it.

He needs to stop crying and work with pain management to get therapy and injections not a pill

Whoever wrote that article needs to jump from the nearest building. Fuck opiates and fuck anybody who takes up for them. That shit kills people and its not even an effective method of pain relief.

The fact that he starts with "listen up doctors, quit being assholes" tells me he has no intention whatsoever of even listening to other opinions.

Patients like him have this "I know my body" attitude that somehow extends to shit they simply don't understand.

Yeah, they did the same for me. I didn't even need it. Ibuprofen was good enough for me. My mom didn't even get the prescription filled since she knew how addictive it could be.

If you need it that's one thing, but they really were giving it out far too easily.

Same thing for me and my wisdom teeth. Only a little soreness the day of and after. Gave me a script for 7 days of Vicodin. Never bothered to pick them up.

When you say you had minor/no pain, were you taking the pain killers?

Obviously I wasn't taking the painkillers... Hence why I said they weren't necessary.

Are there situations in your experience where therapy and other medical intervention would be unable to allow a person to live a fulfilling life, where you wouldn't have a problem prescribing opiods?

Eh, I dunno. I had my ankle surgically reconstructed a few years ago and other than percs for 2 weeks after the surgery all I took was Tylenol even though it still hurts constantly almost 3 years later. It definitely did build up my pain tolerance though, I've pinched my sciatic nerve a couple times and even that's only like a 5/10 on the pain scale to me now. The first year after I broke my ankle wa a constant 10/10

There is NEVER a good reason to prescribe opioids. Its no longer indicated for chronic non-cancer pain

If someone sees me for a fracture or a kidney stone, Ill give a few days worth. I never give narcotics, since its horrible, and never the right choice.
