https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/2/17070624/google-youtube-wilberg-recruiter-hiring-reverse-discrimination-lawsuit

A former YouTube employee has sued Google for allegedly pressuring recruiters to only look for female, black, and Hispanic or Latinx applicants. Arne Wilberg who spent nine years working at Google filed a discrimination suit in January, and The Wall Street Journal reported its existence today. Wilberg claims that Google implemented clear and irrefutable policies meant to exclude white and Asian men in an attempt to increase the companys overall diversity. He also claims that Google retaliated against him for opposing these policies, eventually firing him in November 2017.

Wilbergs lawsuit targets Google and 25 unnamed Google employees who allegedly enforced discriminatory hiring rules, quoting a number of emails and other documents. It claims that for several quarters, Google would only hire people from historically underrepresented groups for technical positions. In one hiring round, the team was allegedly instructed to cancel all software engineering interviews with non-diverse applicants below a certain experience level, and to purge entirely any applications by non-diverse employees from the hiring pipeline. California labor law prohibits refusing to hire employees based on characteristics like race or gender.

"GOOGLE ALLEGEDLY PURGED NON-DIVERSE EMPLOYEE APPLICATIONS"

Wilberg alleges that several employees complained to Google about the companys hiring policies, but were either ignored, transferred, or demoted. The lawsuit says that some employees from marginalized groups were uncomfortable with a program called Project Mirror, where they would be specifically assigned to interview candidates of their own race or gender. One person allegedly complained that managers were speaking about blacks like they were objects.

Google told The Wall Street Journal that we have a clear policy to hire candidates based on their merit, not their identity. ... At the same time, we unapologetically try to find a diverse pool of qualified candidates for open roles, as this helps us hire the best people, improve our culture, and build better products. However, the Journal cites anonymous sources that corroborate some of Wilbergs claims.

As of 2017, 69 percent of Googles workforce was male, compared to 70 percent in 2014, and 91 percent was white or Asian, a percentage thats barely changed over three years. But two former Google employees sued the company early this year for allegedly discriminating against white men, in a far more nebulous and wide-ranging complaint. Conversely, Google is also facing lawsuits alleging that it underpaid women, fired an employee for pro-diversity web posts, and created a bro culture that encouraged sexual harassment.

Edit: Topic title should read Google, but the recruiter worked for YouTube.

What I think is really telling here is that they are apparently desperately looking for qualified black or Hispanic employees, but still had a 91% white and Asian demographic.

Must not be a lot of blacks and Hispanics trained in software engineering. Apparently they're like a god damned unicorn.

This is the thing with STEM and other fields trying to diversify: the qualified candidates just don't exist. Companies spend an immense amount of effort doing outreach to middle and high schools to try and motivate kids to get into the field simply so they have more qualified candidates to hire, but the interest just isn't there. Rather than admit that maybe hiring practices are fair and people just have different preferences, we get shit like this were you're blatantly discriminating to try and force something that simply shouldn't be.

We're in agreement.

I'm saying the way to increase diversity in STEM is to increase interest in STEM starting around the age kids are starting to decide what they like and dislike. Forceful hiring practices that ignore the reality of who's applying are objectively bad.

I don't think he ie suggesting they stop trying to get other demographics interested, so much that he saying they're wasting a lot of time and money trying to hire recruits that don't exist yet.

For whatever reason, they're desperate to hire more colored employees (other than Asians, of course). But those qualified black and Hispanic hires are so rare they have to actively discriminate against all the qualified white and Asian hires just to get a few.

The thing about meritocratic models, in which being better qualified candidates get hired, is not all of us get ahead. Leas qualified candidates get left behind.
