Mortal Kombat X was popular as fuck. But Netherrealm only makes one game at a time, and they just finished up Injustice 2. Expect another MK in a year to a year-and-a-half.

I think they just need to change things up. Too much competition in the 2D sector. I'd like to see Shaolin Monks style games for the future of the series. More shit like Deception's Konquest.

Both franchises seem to be doing just fine.
MKX was a financial and critical success across the board. Injustice 2 did just as good. Street Fighter, as much as people complain, still does well at tournaments and financially. So as much as the critics and gaming community hate them, people are still playing them and they are still making games.
