PC gaming: Where you can put together a build for $500 right now that smashes all consoles on the market and has the additional functionality of being an unrestricted web browser and media center with a much more functional OS that allows you to easily sort, store and navigate all of your documents and files as well as download countless programs and apps to expand even further on the functions of the machine, not to mention you have access to the greatest gaming library of all time.

Edit: Oh, darn. I sure wish I had more consoles right now. How else am I going to hold all these papers down?

that's because the 2080 is like 10x more powerful than the GPUs in consoles.

the PS4 basically uses a Radeon HD 7850, which before the crypto nonsense would sell for like $200.

I don't know a whole lot about crypto, so this connection seems really odd to me.

Genuine question.

You can beat console specs with 500, but pc games also has much higher system reqs. Your specs could be higher but you won't necessary be able to run the game properly with higher graphics.

Short answer is they buy all of them and there is a shortage which attracts scalpers to drive up the price.

Miners didn't kill PC gaming. Meme games and eSports garbage killed it. Any single-player games worth playing are available on console or can be played with low/mid-tier PCs with GPUs that miners don't want

I suppose because a GPU is focused on doing one thing. I didn't realize it could be 'hacked' in such a way but I guess I'm not surprised. I think Sega used their last gen CPU as a sound card, back in the day.
Pretty interesting overall.

Pretty interesting overall.

a CPU is also super-focused at doing one thing. At the end of the day, these are both circuit boards with microprocessors. GPU architecture differs from CPU architecture in that a CPU is optimized to run a small amount of threads extremely fast, while as a GPU is optimized to run thousands of threads simultaneously although each individual thread runs significantly slower than a CPU thread.

The reason is the GPU is responsible for rendering your video. Each pixel on your screen has a thread that generated it. It's not really important what order the pixels get rendered so long as they all get rendered and they all have to get rendered very fast. CPUs have a different purpose where the order of instructions a CPU executes is extremely significant and such it works on executing sequential instructions in a given order as fast as possible.

With Cryptomining, you're trying to make the computer guess a specific cryptographic key. As such, you'll want to guess as often as possible, since most guesses will be wrong, you'll just want the most guesses you can per second. The order of the guesses doesn't matter, so GPUs get the threads that would normally be used for rendering pixels repurposed for guessing keys. Since it's all just 0s and 1s at the end of the day, you can make it do whatever you want. It's not a tool "for rendering graphics" it's a tool for running thousands of simultaneous threads. This just happens to be an optimal tool for rendering graphics, but can be used to do lots of things.
