Without seeing the hours-worked figures, there's only speculation.
So, I'd speculate that the general lack of "family obligations" means longer hours and fewer personal days, which leads to being prioritized for raises and promotions over someone who has to leave before 6, and misses random days because a kid is sick or school got cancelled.

Gender, genitals, sexual orientation, and marital status have nothing significant to do with income. It's having children that ruins everything.
