It's a big pet peeve of mine. Like, people tend to speak in simile and metaphors when having friendly chats, yet there's some folks out there that just take everything at face value and don't understand friendly humor and stuff.

Like yesterday when talking to a customer and telling her I'd be putting glueboards down in her house just in case she got any crickets in the washroom, she says "Oh, glue traps, oh no I'm not gonna have any little chipmunks get caught in those will I?" I replied with a chuckle "Nah I wouldn't worry. Well, if you have chipmunks running around your house you might!" And she looked at me 100% deadpan, concerned-looking and says "Oh no! I have chipmunks in my house?"

Like, motherfuck, how do people like that go through life not understanding how casual conversation works? That sounds like a nightmare of an existence.

That's not a case of somebody taking something literally, that's a case of somebody around ~85 IQ unable to comprehend the simple sentence you said to them. When you talk to large numbers of people, it becomes pretty easy to identify who's just kind of dumb and isn't going to understand what you're saying to them.

"Two plus two, it equals four."
"So what you're saying is, purple monkey dishwasher?"
"Yes, have a nice day."

That's going a step beyond literal interpretation. You didn't even say she had chipmunks. You said 'if.'

What makes the world interesting is all the little differences people can have. There's an Asian guy who provides translation and is part of the MUGEN community while also sometimes derailing topics with somewhat decent porn. He's 40 years old and somehow can't figure out how to cook something like simple cheese omelette.

I'm smart enough to be good at something probably, and my brain functions similarly a computer that's been soaked in sugary coffee for an hour.

You just have to fill in the missing pieces for them.
