Not that I think it is or isn't, I don't really have a preference or a dog in this fight. But it's really not that different from Dark Souls with a Lovecraft skin.

It's faster paced since it's less focused on defense. Rewarding you for getting in damage and the lack of shield really speeds it up.

This. The Lovecraftian design is more interesting to me than Dark Souls' aesthetic.

It depends on what you want out of the game. Mechanically and fundamentally it's a very sound game. It has a greater emphasis on speed and aggressiveness, and the setting makes it a lot more distinct than Dark Souls. You start off as a simple Werewolf hunter, and throughout the course of the game, graduate to face eldritch horrors and alien entities.

I like the atmosphere, it's even better than demons souls imo

Also gameplay overall feels very streamlined. It was a nice change after the clunky mess of ds2..

it is, IMO.

I think that Bloodborne has the better: art direction, atmosphere, plot, and PvE.

and I like how it's a good mix of action/horror/mystery/sci-fi

Too bad the game's pvp is shit.

But yeah, it's DLC and atmosphere is on par with Dark Souls. Central Yarhnam is fantastic level design.

I thought BB was way worse than the Souls series. You get like one weapon, armor does literally nothing, the areas aren't near as varied, and there is not much replay value because of those reasons combined. I played through it once and never had any desire to return, where as I've played through the Souls games countless times. To me they are just more fun! I know that's an unpopular opinion especially on this website but eh whatever lol

Just my opinion anyway

But Dark Souls can be played almost identically. Only difference is parrying I guess, but I still just find myself dodgerolling mostly.

It's an YMMV thing, actually. I disliked the combat because I felt like it rewarded button mashing over combos, and as much as the setting drew me in, it got really, really boring after the third or forth "victorian gentlemen that suddenly becomes a surprisingly agile pile of dead bodies" boss. The settings seemed to repeat a lot, and I think it may have something to do with the fact that the referench pool for eldritch abominations is a lot smaller than that of high fantasy/dark fantasy/gothic fantasy.

Anyway, it's my least favorite of the series, but it's still an excellent game in its own right.

Lovecraftian inspired lore makes Bloodborne incredibly engaging, but I would put its lore on par with DS1.
the Gothic Victorian aesthetic is a fresh of fresh air in video games
atmosphere, it's just better
art direction, enemy design, weapon design, boss design and others. It's amazing.
combat: it's faster; more fluid, blood vials streamline the healing mechanic, the weapons are on average way more interesting than any other Souls game, and better designed. Other aspects are subjective like the parry system, prominent feature of guns etc. Trick weapons allow for a tad more complexity to using a weapon.
emphasis on fashion since defense makes a negligible difference plus non-existent upgrade mechanic, and the character creator is the first major step in the series.
some of the best bosses ever feature in the game
Chalice dungeon grind is some of the most fun post-game singleplayer/multiplayer activity, at least it was for me
Old Hunters is king of all Soulsborne DLCs.
level design is better than DS2, on par with DS3 but not as good as DS1.
