If it wasn't for humans, dogs would have have been our loyal and obedient fur pals. WE domesticated DOGS, from their wolf ancestors. The power of humans to shape and change planet earth is a double edged sword, sure, but if it's a child then he has not lived long enough to make a mark on earth--and all children deserve at least that chance.

Also, I believe in the concept of utilitarianism: the act that benefits the most, is the best act. The kid would die and the child's family and friends would be in mourning. if the dog would die only I would mourn him.

The dog's capacity to change the world is little to none. It might make some people happy, or might get local, national or international recognition for saving a child's life or something, but a human has far greater capacity to positively, or negatively change the world. It's a bit of a gamble, but perhaps the act of ME saving him, in an act of selflessness he might be shaken, and be in gratitude of humans forever, and that may spark a certain revolutionary change in him.

I don't know. I'd prefer to save both, but the world never provides easy solutions.

edit: also statistically, most humans don't turn into dictators, sociopaths and psychopaths or display any signs of anti-social personalty disorder, or anything on the high scale of dangerous.

Except, statistically, people wouldn't turn into murdering psychopaths, and like I argued before, me saving him would be an act of selflessness. That act alone may allow him to grow into an upstanding moral citizen.

Also think about what the parents are feeling. Can you live with the fact knowing that his parents will forever mourn their lost child? Then to remember that he had a chance to survive, if only you had saved their child?

I feel it is more human to save the one you have an emotional attachment too.

A child enlists a default level of attachment so long as you aren't heartless.

So it's going to come down to how much you value your dog.

The issue is simple.

What's yours > a stranger's to most people.
But
A human > dog to most people.

Mix both, and its 50/50. Though people without pets probably shouldn't be voting.

Your analogy doesn't work. Most people already know they probably won't lick a furry animal. Nor an ass. Let alone the furry ass of an animal. They are qualified to answer your question.

If you've never had a pet, you don't really know how attached you could be. You don't have enough experience to answer.

A more logical comparison is "What do you like more? Ham or sausage?"

People who have never even tasted sausage probably shouldn't be answering the question.
