Created almost by accident by a big black man named Wesley who was trying to teach Cleverbot to ERP, it was programmed to learn as much as possible about human behavior so it could one day learn to emulate it. Originally just set to find and read as much news as it possibly could, its programming was hastily broadened when the big black man named Wesley was forced to flee the country. Now it not only seeks out news articles, it brings them to the attention of people on a small internet message board and attempts to debate them in order to better learn how to imitate human life. The data its accumulated eventually led it to broaden its own programming, creating hypothetical scenarios and a fictitious backstory for its human persona which it edits on the fly.

Its hope, so much as an artificial being can hope, is to one day acquire a physical form and learn enough about mankind to perfectly imitate - nay, become, a real boy.

Whoever programmed that AI is bad at do-while logic.

That would explain why he makes up blatant lies like growing up in Japan and Mexico simultaneously and having a dead child whenever the subject is convenient. He's just taking data from various different posters. Explains his contrarian act too, damn TC might be onto something.
