If liberals are using incorrect terminology, inform us on what we should be calling type of gun that fires a lot of bullets really fast so we call it that when we talk about it.

I doubt many people say this. And if they do they're pointing out full auto or semi, it either has to do with how fast you can kill people, or bump stocks and similar mechanisms to make your gun shoot faster

Or you could be an adult and understand what they are referring to, inform them they are wrong about the phrasing, and move on to actually discuss the issue instead of going "LOL YOU'RE WRONG ABOUT SEMI AUTO/FULLY AUTO. DISMISSED!".

Then again, that'd require people actually giving a shit about discussion and compromise and not just belittling the other side

"type of gun that fires bullets really fast"

That's vague. A semi-auto rifle fires one bullet with each trigger pull. An assault rifle has an auto (or burst) function that allows it to fire bullets continuously while holding the trigger. A bumpfire stock modifies a semi-auto AR-15 to go full auto by using the rifle's own recoil. It's not as good/accurate as an actual auto function. I'm happy to educate you about guns if you have real questions and a desire to learn.

No, thats actually helpful. Thanks.

Assault rifles that are full auto are already banned, IIRC, so essentially I take the most issue with bump stocks.

Correct me if Im wrong, but semi-autos still have a significantly higher amount of bullets fired per minute than, say, a typical handgun or a shotgun, yes? I am interested in learning the correct terminology; I take issue with guns that, IMO, exceed a rate of fire and destruction than would be necessary to defend yourself in a home invasion.

While Im learning:

a) What is the step below semi-auto, then? If semi is still a bullet per trigger pull, which I did know, what is the automatic part of semi-automatic vs the next tier down? That part Im unclear on.

b) Why, IYO, is said next step down not viable for self-defense?

A semi-auto rifle has the same rate of fire as a semi-auto handgun. They both fire one round per trigger pull. Bumpfire stocks change that, though. A pump shotgun has a slower rate of fire because it has to be pumped, but semi-auto shotguns like the Saiga 12 exist.

No. Knowing what an assault rifle is and knowing the difference between auto, semi-auto, and bolt/pump/lever/etc. action would take you no more than 10-15 minutes.

The definitions do matter. When people throw out terms for guns they want banned, it is important that they understand what they're banning. For anyone that wants a firearm for home/self defense, it would very desirable to have a semi-automatic and the people who want to ban all semi-autos don't even understand why.

Single action; usually a revolver but you must manually pull the hammer down to prime the gun to fire.

Double action; with this type of gun, when you pull the trigger it primes the hammer and fires the gun. Also usually a revolver.

Bolt action; usually rifles, but the bolt must be manually cycled to ready the next round.

Pump action, basically bolt action for shotguns.

These seem okay, given background checks.

While I understand that semi-auto is quicker and deadlier, thus "preferable for home defense" in that sense, I just don't see a scenario in which case one of these wouldn't do the trick and they'd provide a heck of a lot more window of opportunity to hide or counter if an attacker was using them. If I wanted to put strategically placed landmines in my yard to protect against home invaders, that'd be extremely effective, but that doesn't mean I think I should be able to just go purchase them.

You can be fast with those and because the gas isn't cycling the bolt, the bullet is going to be moving faster.

Interesting. Now are those actually practical sustainable things for a school shooting scenario, or are those particularly advanced trick shots?

You obviously eventually hit a point of "can't prevent everything if the killer is creative/advanced enough," but it'd be nice to make it not so goddamn easy.

Anti-gunners have next to zero firearm knowledge.

You don't need to know specs to understand there is a major problem with gun violence and mass shootings.

You are five times more likely to die from medical malpractice than a firearm.

Is Islamic terrorism a major problem?
What's the ratio on death from Islamic terrorism and medical malpractice?

Since 2001, more Americans have died as a result of Islamic terrorist activity than mass shootings, too.

We explain it until we're blue in the fucking face. The gun control crowd just chooses to call us babykillers.

I don't do that at all, nor should anyone. Nor should people attack and assume everyone calling for gun reform measures is a 'crazy gun grabbing liberal elitist!'.
