well for starters I'm not a fan of using "high-functioning" or "low-functioning" as labels - the latter is an excuse to deny people their independence, and the former is an excuse to deny people assistance they might need.

Distinctions are necessary. Some people simply can't have their own independence

cool. I addressed this train of thought in the rest of my post

I don't think I could. It's nothing personal, but autistic people I've known have generally irritated me. I know they can't help it, but I just can't tolerate being around them for long.

TC, let me simply the decision making process for most males:

Is she hot?

Guys will literally date psychopaths

And you're wrong. The distinction is necessary. Obviously people need to be catered to on an individual basis, but that doesn't mean distinctions shouldn't be made.

then the distinctions should be based on something that isn't as loaded and simplistic as "high-functioning" and "low-functioning"

Yes... and girls often seem to have no problem dating some repulsive/obese swine... if he happens to be rich. From the two. I think the male view is more... honest, at the very least :). That said, I wouldn't date the movie type/homicidal psychopath... Unless she was really, REALLY hot. Heh!

Anyway, yes, indeed! "Is she hot", is extremely relevant question. It always is really. But especially, if the social side of her, is unlikely to be that appealing... Oh bohoo!

calling it "high-functioning autism" instead of "aspergers" is a step forward in that it acknowledges that they're not different things, but it would be better to just call it "autism" and work with the people as individuals.

the whole vocabulary surrounding autism-related issues is based on the experiences of the out-group: autistic people are labelled "high-functioning" because it's easy for neurotypicals to understand them, or "low-functioning" because it's difficult.

it's generally best to tread lightly in this area - there are a lot of sensitive points

I get where you're coming from, I'm not aware of any other terms to best explain what I mean. I think you might be reading too far into things, I'm not saying high functioning doesn't need help or that low-functioning or whatever you'd call them are lesser. I'd relate it more like what I am: I'd say I'm a "high-functioning" bipolar since I'm able to keep a steady job and have enough self-awareness to take precautions in order to lessen the real-world impact of my mood swings. As opposed to someone who would be more... Difficult to deal with.

It can come across as insensitive, but I'll clear that up by saying I'm just working with easy language anyone can understand just to discuss something like this topic.

In my situation, meh. I don't have high standards, I tend to put personality and common interest above looks. She's certainly not ugly.

that's fair I suppose - you're far from the worst offender in this topic, though the opening post does tend to dictate, to some extent, the framing of the dialogue in the rest of the topic.
