Students in South Florida walked out of classes Wednesday morning, one week after gunman Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people at a Parkland high school.

Students in Broward and Miami-Dade counties held signs as they walked around running tracks and stood on athletic fields just after 10 a.m.

Their demonstrations come as Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students flocked to the Floridas capitol in Tallahassee to implore lawmakers to ban assault rifles.

That makes me feel great, Douglas High School student Rachel Catania told CNN from Tallahassee of the walkouts. That just drives me more to know that things are going to change.

Lawmakers voted against debating a bill to ban assault rifles Tuesday night as horrified students looked on.

The walkouts Wednesday are part of several planned acts to stop the rash of school shootings and stand up to NRA-loyal politicians.

The students who survived Cruzs rampage are now fighting off accusations from conspiracy theorists who claim theyre actors trying to take away peoples guns.

Im not getting paid for this, Rachel, a sophomore at the school, said Wednesday.

Im not a crisis actor, she said. Im not even sure those are real.
