half of them are 5 stars, no problems, and then there are some others that say things like "sparks shot out", "flames", "smoke", "exploded", and "killed my ___" ? All for the exact same product.

I tend to err on the cautious side and try to avoid buying things like that, but I admit the five star reviews sometimes tempt me to buy.

When some products fail, they fail phenomenally. If you didn't encounter the issue, though, you're good to go.

In general, anything you buy from certain nations *can* vary greatly in quality since the initial runs from a manufacturer will have a pretty good standard -- because they're selling the brand on that -- but then they quickly start to cut corners. Or they might have just changed suppliers.

My favorites are for things like multi-million dollar pieces of art, $35,000 pairs of socks, $10,000 gallons of milk, etc. Oh, and Liquid Ass.

In general, the risky stuff I had in mind involved a power supply or AC adapter of some kind. It's like, how am I supposed to know whether to buy this or not? But of course that means I move on to one that doesn't have mention of explosions in the reviews.

Same. For those where the reviews are kinda split down the middle I also look at dates of the reviews. If the later reviews are good while the earlier reviews are bad I kinda hope/assume said product is a newer version and improved upon.

I have seen the opposite though, a product with good reviews but due to a change in production the more recent reviews would be give a lower rating.

I often see these on Amazon have come to the conclusion that most Amazon users who write poor reviews are either trolling or it's a user error as to why the product doesn't work for the most part. If the product has a lot of informative 5 star reviews and/or is cheap enough to take the risk I do so.

I like those ones and the ones that give one star because the Amazon box was dented or the delivery driver left it somewhere the recipient didn't like.

I saw one review that gave 1* because the vendor was out of stock.

If it's a potential fire hazard, you might not want to play around with it.

It's annoying when people use product reviews to review the seller who is unnamed and possibly not even selling anymore.

Yeah, it's pretty misleading. That's what the seller feedback button is for. There were a lot of negative reviews at the peak of NES Classic Edition scalping.

They do it for anything that has a lot of scalping....
