Firstly, I only ever see this on the internet and have never heard it used in real life, yet somehow it's incredibly popular on sites such as Reddit (maybe it's an American thing?).

Secondly, aren't the terms we have for relationships enough? Boyfriend/Girlfriend, Partner, Fiance, Husband/Wife; that covers almost every popular and necessary classification.

Anyone else strongly agree, or disagree?

Disagree, I hear it used pretty frequently. Not like this is my significant other, Laura but interchangeably with partners. Like, speaking to a large group about bringing SOs.

I hear it used frequently as well.

I'm not sure, but I think it might have come into play at first with the elderly...like maybe a dude in his 60s wanted the gf to be a "significant other" instead of his girlfriend.

But I'm not sure.

It's just a way of talking about some one's partner when you don't know if their partner is their wife, boyfriend, transsexual dominatrix, and so on.

Why use it instead of "partner"? Because language is dumb and terms always fall out of common usage and are replaced by other terms.

Ah, I have to admit it makes sense using it that way.

Yeah this is the only way I ever see it used. No one introduces someone as their significant other. But when you send an invitation to people, you might say "feel free to bring you significant other."

It's just about being polite, not pretentious.
