"I wanted to speak to you about your circumstances, and how out of sheer desperation you chose to steal a morsel of food in order to feed your family. You knew it was wrong, but you have to do what you have to do to survive, am I right?"

I've heard of some people combatting this sort of thing with ghost pepper extract, though you could potentially get in trouble for that.

How could you get in trouble for putting ghost pepper extract on your own candy, then leaving it on your own desk?

The beauty of poisoning your own food with ultra hot capsaicin extract is that it's YOUR food.

IF someone takes YOUR FOOD then they are at fault not you.

Legally nothing could be done against you.

I would not recommend gloating about it though or even talking about it to other co-workers, because if word gets out that you planned it specifically to poison your food to catch the thief now you cannot claim innocence anymore. Though realistically it was still your food, I don't think legally you could get in trouble for it, but HR might be an issue if such a thing were to get out.

And yes I totally did that and it was very satisfying because I had an idea who was stealing the food and turned out I was right.

Others will say to use visine but then you are LITERALLY poisoning your food, not just using a food supplement so that is not a good way to do it.

I don't know because I'm not a legal expert. Morally, I see no issue with doing this. But if the person became sick I wouldn't be surprised if you could somehow get in trouble for this.

Well considering a thief can sue you for slipping on ice in your stairs and injuring themselves. If capsaicin caused any extreme reaction in some People

Let's say a person allergic to nuts stole your candy then had an allergic reaction.
That person couldn't sue you, I would think.

Technically they can't. The only way they can, is if you boobytrapped your home.

I think firing somebody for eating food is really harsh.

They would be getting fired for stealing from customers

Yeah but it's only chocolate, some people won't think of it as stealing unless it is pointed out to them. You know what I mean.

No I don't know what you mean. There's no way these people are taking items from peoples' desks while those people aren't there and don't know it's wrong. It's not as though they are taking food from a common area.

And you think they should be fired for taking chocolate from a desk?

I think people who use their job as a means to steal should be fired from that job, yes. And if the problem persists then the contract with that company should be cancelled.

Well I disagree, I think that the punishment should be proportional to the crime. I think firing somebody in this case is overkill.

You live in a dream world buddy.
