Not yet.

They're launching the full shebang, paid super version this September though I think.
It remains to be seen how good it will be though. Supposedly it's going to let you download classic NES and SNES games for free that have added-in online multiplayer though and will only be like $25 per year. We don't know any other details yet.

TBQH I'm a longtime Nintendo fan but I'm not expecting much still since I've begrudgingly come to grips with the fact they just don't understand how to handle online gameplay.

I remember playing CoD WaW on Wii and you had to aim in front of people to account for lag. It was fun at the time but its been like 10 years now.

nintendo is being dragged into the modern age against their will and doing it as slowly as they can. It's sometimes a good thing when they don't implement predatory progression systems and fill their games with micro transactions but the lack of modern online systems is a real bummer.

I partly wonder if that's because they don't want to be branded for more "serious" gamers and lose their casual status, but that could just be the fanboy in me talking. For whatever reason their online platform still royally sucks.

This becomes very clear when you look at how much they control player communication in their games. They want to be able to control everything that happens in their games/consoles and by attempting it they inevitably gimp the whole experience.

They basically don't want kids to go online on their games and then hear and see profanity everywhere, get insulted, etc, because it goes against their policies.

That's my takeaway based on their statements on the matter, anyway.

But this is getting away from why nintendo doesn't want to do it. It's not really about protecting society, it's about protecting their own image. They want to maintain the squeeky clean image that makes them appealing to everyone, not just gamers.

Most of Mario Kart doesn't really require chat, but everytime I play Renegade Roundup in Mario Kart I think "This mode would be HUGE if we could talk to teammates and actually strategize."
