I'm sure they aren't the only company to do this, or maybe they are, but anyways.. they have this thing that comes up every year called "The Offer" where as long as you've been working there for a year+, you can resign and they will pay you $1,000 for each year worked. However, you can't work for Amazon or any of its companies... ever again. It's weird as shit. What do they gain from this? I have a couple theories but I'll wait for you guy's input first...

I know. I didn't even embellish it. That's how they describe it to us at the all hands meetings.

Just sounds like they want to retain people with the promise of a higher resignation bonus next year. It's a weird way to go about it, though, a sort of "how important is it to me that I work here."

They only want people who really want to be there. If you're on the fence about leaving and don't really like it there, you're going to take the offer and leave, and they think they'll be better off without you. Whether or not that's true is completely up in the air of course, but that's their reasoning.

It also gets people who are on the fence to stick around for a bit before they'd leave, probably.

I've stayed at a place for two months that I absolutely hated just to get my 2 weeks vacation.
