Accidental friendly fire that I put myself in the way of, because short of being unconscious, it was pretty much impossible for it to hurt me, let alone kill me.

So we found a bunch of undead in a room. Our wizard going first threw down an acid pit right under the boss of them all. Most of the skeletons around him fell into the pit, but the big boss just floated over it not even being phased.

Fast forward a couple rounds, the remaining skeletons have been killed and the bearded devil also fell into the pit, it's just us and this big evil undead thing.

My rogue steps up, and to bite him a bunch while he's still floating over the pit and deal some serious damage. I have to make a reflex save to avoid falling in, but no problem, I can only fail on a 1 and even if I do, my acrobatics is high enough I can jump out. Sure enough, I'm fine.

Our oracle takes their turn giving the party some buffs.

Big bad's turn. Makes a touch attack on me. No problem, my touch AC is pretty high since I'm a rogue. Still hits. Well, that sucks. Now I make a fortitude save. No problem, my fortitude is decently high. Roll a 2. Uh-oh.

Oracle: "You can reroll that because of the thing I did earlier."

Right! Reroll. 2 again... Great.

GM: "You take 65 damage."

I'm am unconscious, but still alive. I am exactly 1 HP away from death. But you can't avoid falling into the acid pit when you're unconscious.

Wizards turn. "Alright, I dismiss the acid pit." We look at the spell. Nope. That one is not a spell that can be dismissed. Uh-oh... "Alright, I throw a wall of fire between the rogue and the baddie."

Paladin's turn. Has the choice of dragging me away from the acid pit, or healing me hopefully bringing me up to 0 and making me conscious. Chooses to heal with channel energy. Roll his 5d6 for a very poor total of 12 on the heal.

I was at -13. It's just one short of making me conscious. It's now my turn, I fall into the pit taking 23 damage and die instantly.

And so the party has its first death and also the death of the last remaining original party member.

Shortly after, paladin goes goes berserk with his smite evil undead ability and hits the big bad for 80some damage twice killing him instantly.

It wasn't anyone's fault, just a series of a lot of really poor rolls. Even if the paladin had dragged me away from the pit, I would have had to roll a nat 20 on my con check to survive. Though, it would have the advantage of still having a body to resurrect afterwards.

...

Well, time to make a new character!

Ouch. Yeah... at least from that story you can actually blame the bad dice rolls and not the poor decision making. We just lost our barbarian to fucking Deck of Many Things (Tarot cards).

Working in a team is great! It always helps to have someone else to blame.

Well, there was some bad decision making. I failed to ask for healing after the fight where I got some minor injuries. But I think it would have been just enough to stay conscious after that big hit. After that escaping to the backline for healing would have been no problem.

I haven't ever got to try it before, but dying to a Deck of Many Things is certainly a classic. I feel like if I ever got the chance, I would absolutely overdraw and end up also dying to it.

Yeah, they're tons of fun. You should check out roll20.net. It's how I've found all my groups and how I play. It does take a while to find a group on there, let alone a good group, but it's certainly worth it.

While I agree it might take a while to find a good group, it probably wouldn't take too long to just find a group to play with. Just to get a feeling for the game. Not only that, but for green_dragon, they even have some groups that look for new players to help them get into the game.

The problem is that most of those games have a dozen or so applicants each, and they can't exactly accept them all. You also generally want a game that suits your schedule, which can often times exclude a ton of games.

I guess that's true. I guess I also got lucky. Because of my work schedule at the time(11pm-7am), it was easier to find games since most people were sleep when I was at work. So they were awake when I was home. And I guess I somehow got a place over others for the games I chose.
