https://techcrunch.com/2018/02/14/tinder-to-adopt-bumbles-ladies-first-feature-in-a-future-update

Tinder will make a change to its dating app in an upcoming update that will allow women to message first, according to a report from MarketWatch this morning, which TechCrunch has also confirmed. The new option will allow women to choose when to start a conversation, but it will not be the default setting as it is in Bumble. Instead, women will be able to decide whether or not they want to enable it, we understand.

Currently, Tinder allows either men or women to make the first move after a mutual match has been made. This double-opt in design has made Tinder one of the most successful dating apps on the market to date, with now over 3 million paid subscribers in total, accounting for 30 percent of parent company Matchs revenue in 2017. While Tinder doesnt detail its registered or active user base, its app has been downloaded over 100 million times.

However, Bumble has eaten into Tinders territory with its quickly growing dating app that claims over 26 million users. Tinder has also tried to acquire that company in the past. Given that Tinder is now going to roll out a very Bumble-like feature, I guess we know how those talks wrapped up.

The new option to let women start conversations is not yet live in Tinders app, but will rather be included in a future update. It will also be tested ahead of a public launch as most of Tinders features today are we hear.

This won't be mandatory like it is with Bumble, but creepy messages is one of the biggest female user complaints on Tinder, so it's safe to say many of the more attractive women will be using it.

Life will be a getting a little bit harder if you're not a desirable guy pretty soon.

Meh... Tinder was always about people trying to hook up for sex. A feature that adds another layer of shallowness to something that was always shallow isn't a big loss for anyone.

Tinder really hasn't been that way since 2014 or so.

The first few years of Tinder were the Wild West of app dating and were amazing like that, but Tinder has evolved into just a regular dating platform now that's occasionally used for hook ups.

JDate is pretty much dead. JSwipe is the Tinder-equivalent, which is awesome (if you live in NYC, anyway).

but my question is...this will be a feature that women can turn on...you can only message people who you match with...meaning the woman found you attractive too....so if they want to message first why is this feature necessary then?

Prolly just swipe right on everyone and then wait for the matches to pour in and then thats when you go thru the profile.

Women won't even see those unless they they list "female" as the gender they're seeking, though. Most women don't.

It'll be optional at first for Tinder, but it will work like it does with Bumble. Most women swipe fairly casually and only message after seeing what their matches are and reading profiles. Guys are much more likely to just spam out messages to every match and try to get laid. This will reduce that behavior.

Fortunately, if you're a desirable guy who already has luck on Bumble, you'll be the cream of the crop on Tinder.

If I had to guess, Tinder has the analytics of their userbase and they were probably losing a lot of women to bumble. Given that a dating service lives and dies by how large their woman userbase is, they probably thought that the added power would be an attractive feature. Having total control not only over who you swipe, but who among them you even choose to engage with, even if it's redundant, is attractive as a feature.

They have been, and they've even tried to acquire Bumble to stop the loss (Bumble has had no interest in selling to them).

I personally think Bumble is also a much better app in terms of UI and experience, whereas Tinder feels like some crappy pay-to-win mobile game. I don't blame people for bailing. The only decent thing about Tinder is the size of its user base.

Or is this supposed to be a setting that they can turn on and off if they so choose?

So I'm not understanding how this is going to stop creepy messages.

They already opted in with the matching. This is a third, unnecessary opt in. How is getting said creepy message as a reply to the initial message any different?

Sounds like solving an imaginary problem.

Right now, if two people match, either person can message first. This setting makes it so the women must message first, then a normal conversation can start. That was the gimmick that launched Bumble.

People don't put a lot of thought into initial swipes, and often just mindlessly swipe right based on the first pic until they match.

Interesting, I wouldn't have thought bumble gained that kind of traction. But agreed, it is a better app, less frills.

I found the selection better on bumble as well, but maybe that's just me and not to do with the design

So guys who always swipe right will just... continue to swipe right. Only now they're gated by not only matching with females but also for the females to make the first move. In the case of matching up with multiple dudes in a spree, the female will now choose who to engage.

Cuts back on the creepy openers for sure, but in terms of gaming strategy, not much has changed. (Unattractive) Incels who needed to be the first to engage are left out in the crossfire. But, if they're also the creeps then c'est la vie.

There are gay guys that've connected via Bumble. In a same gender scenario the rules are different.

In a way it might, but in another way, not so much. If women have to message first, then when you do match and she actually messages you first, that actually makes it significantly easier to gauge interest imo.

I totally agree. For the guys who get messages, this concept is great.

To be honest, I don't see how this will change anything.

A guy can message first, but there's no guarantee there would of ever got a reply in the first place. At least if the girl messages first the guy has a pretty good chance of it leading somewhere.

It's because it goes against our biological nature damn it. Men are supposed to be the alphas who go and take the initiative to obtain a female mate. This is just part of the continued 21st century emasculation of males.
