I have no fucking clue. What is the actual point to life. I already have everything I need.
I could die and nothing would matter.

What's your plan in retirement? Wasn't it like open a shelter or some shit

I'm just going to erode into dust in my apartment?

Have you started with cleaning your room? As strange and stupid as it sounds, it has helped me become much more organized all around in my life.

Every morning, my wife and I look at each other bleary eyed, thinking about having to get up and do shit that needs to get done...

and we say in JP's voice "Clean the rooooooom!". It makes it silly and fun, but every morning our room is cleaned

It's bled into other things as well because I used to be shit and cleaning up after myself. Now I have to. I dunno, you might not be that bad so maybe that won't help...but it does feel good to get it done.

EDIT: and its easy to at least start trying

For what it's worth, I think it's ambition. Too bad I don't have enough as I'd like. Creativity to realize what I want to do, and ambition to do it

After working for a couple years with some good engineers, and knowing there are even better at other companies, I definitely feel like I'm a lousy engineer.

Oh trust me I know all about the divine act of cleaning up my room

Yup.

I feel like I'm using zero knowledge or skills gained from college and that I am becoming a worse engineer with each passing day. I had trouble remembering fucking hydrostatic pressure recently, had to look it up. How the fuck did I pass fluid dynamics

26, four years of professional experience

Though two years were spent drawing rectangles in 2D CAD software. Now I moved up to rectangular prisms with 3D CAD software. I'm not even exaggerating.

Ever thought both paths are correct? I respect both people and I think they are both right depending on your outlook on life.

this. it's your life to do with what you want as long as you don't harm others.

Yeah but Jordan Peterson says fulfillment comes from responsibility, Bill Burr says ambition, I'd imagine both are better than sitting in my pajamas playing Civ VI all day.

I'm just going to erode into dust in my apartment?

i think most of us are unsatisfied with our lives if we don't have some responsibility / do something productive. that's why you hear about retirees saying the first six months are amazing then it starts getting slow and boring. i guess im saying i think they're both right.

I actually ended up doing circuit design work as my first job, so I've definitely been using what I learned in school. It's just that all the other engineers know so much more that it reminds me that I'm just a beginner still.

Then I know other companies do even harder and more complex engineering work.

But once all the the design work is done, I'm gonna be doing other things and my skills are just gonna get worse.

Engineers are fun to fuck with. They take their PE cert so serious and are always sensitive to jokes. A lot of them here are sanitary engineers and will flip their lids if someone calls them glorified plumbers, which they basically are.

Ah man...you're only 26 - you'll be fine. Obviously you'll want to make sure the job you are in is challenging you and moving you forward, but maybe you're comparing yourself to some freaks of nature who are lead engineers at 23 years of age? Not saying you are, but its an easy trap.

You'll start hitting a stride once you get to around 30....people look at you different and start to take you seriously...its weird and ageist or whatever you wanna call it...but it was VERY noticeable for myself.

If you have a job and you're an engineer you are doing just fine...keep pushing

There's value in both philosophies. Problem is that most people on this board just forego family so they can spend more time gaming rather than do anything worthwhile or interesting with their lives.

And what about those of us who want to retire at 55 so we can fucking live it up?

Depends what you want to do with your retirement

That's CAD operator shit. That's what people go to 2 year vocational schools for. Throw your engineering degree in the garbage.

Unrelated, but the second you notice certain people (usually younger millennials) starting a large number of their sentences (both offline and online) with "I mean", you'll begin to see it everywhere.

I mean, I'm just saying!
I mean, yeah....some snide sarcasm...

@-Gavirulax- I'm definitely guilty of starting a lot of sentences online this way.

If it makes you feel any better most engineers are bad engineers but the good ones are amazing. We had an engineer in their 30s here that worked for an oil company that knew nothing about fractional distillations. Let that sink in.
