just passing by to say that circumcision is clearly barbaric and it's insane that this conversation is even entertained in 2018

if a western doctor tried to cut off a newborn baby's clitoris (which is completely analogous and also qualifies as "tradition" in certain countries) they would be jailed and rightly so. stop advocating for the mutilation of babies, you weird people.

(p.s. it's really not hard to clean foreskin, and the amount of people who don't have one who insist otherwise is baffling to me. plus circumsized men are scientifically proven to experience dulled sexual pleasure, so have fun with that!)

Is it dulled as much as a female's would be sans clitoris though? I know you are correct, but I'm just curious if it is known how that compares, for analogy's sake. Penn and Teller had a show called Bullshit at one point where they would call bullshit on something and explain why. It was both entertaining and informative. Circumcision was the topic of one episode, and they agreed with you and vlado that it is in fact bullshit. However, there was this one old dude they interviewed who had figured out a way for one to uncircumcise oneself by stretching of even weighing down existing shaft-skin until is essentially covered the head while flaccid and was for all intents and purposes, new foreskin. Penn even warned that they were gonna show his dick at the end of The episode. I thought he was joking but nope, they did in fact show the dude's dick and it looked uncircumcised and pretty much what you'd expect given his explanation of the process. I think it would be worth watching, for anyone on either side of the argument. As someone who is circumcised, I've considered trying that idea myself, but I don't really have the motivation or discipline to see it through...

I feel like this topic is actually going places now, since we are finally discussing worthwhile topics, like penises.

there's a reason i mentioned that at the end in a jokey tone - it was hardly the main crux of my argument - but fair enough. a simple google search yields studies that say the opposite too, but i'm happily to admit it seems broadly inconclusive.

but still, surely the burden of proof should be on the people performing non-consensual surgery on babies? if the best argument you guys have is "if you ignore basic hygiene, it can lead to health problems" then we might as well chop off everyone's toes too.

(p.s. i am familiar with vaginas, which is why i said clits were "analogous" and not the exact same thing. but you guys already understand my broader point there, so i won't bother restating it.)

I mean there are the moderate health benefits that extend beyond just hygiene, like the reduction in penile cancer risk.

If you want a full throated defense of it, you're really not going to get it from me. It's why pediatricians have gone from "you should do it" to "you can take it or leave it." I will say that if you wanted a circumcision and your parents didn't get you circumcised as a baby, you're in for a super painful experience as an adult.

I'd also like to remind you the type of person Vlado is, and he likely opposes it not because he's against "penis mutilation" but because it's mostly performed by the two groups he hates the most: Jews and Muslims.

And the general feeling among women is that they prefer circumcised, with polling showing the women who do prefer uncircumcised in the single digits (although a decent percentage don't have a preference, but the majority do prefer circumcised).

Also, places like the UK said that circumcision was no longer a mandatory procedure and stopped covering it under their NHS, which probably explained the drop in countries like that.

i assume you're only talking about american women here? i can buy this being true in the US, which is the only the only western country where circumcision is still the norm (and also demonizes foreskin as "weird" for some reason), but any european or east asian woman that exhibited such preferences would be setting herself up for pretty profound disappointment, considering almost no one is circumcised in most of the developed world.

Yeah just U.S. women. Which I would argue is kinda important to me since it's where I live and the vast majority of women I'll interact with.

And like I said, the common complaint among women is hygiene, so American men aren't doing a great job of cleaning their foreskins.

Women where I live prefer it by a majority.

I had/have a small amount of health benefits from it.
