And wonder how the hell we accepted a system that required the belief that no one else on the road would do something to kill you for so long?

I mean eventually self driving AI will reach a point of near perfection, but until then it's going to be kind of rough. I see that as far scarier than human drivers.

We're never going to get self-driving cars.

The legal issue will never be accepted.

Pretty sure Google's cars have still only been involved in one at-fault accident and it was solely because the vehicle assumed the bus it hit (at really low speed) was going to yield to it.

In terms of # accidents/miles traveled they are already far superior to human drivers.

Statistically, but I think I'm a better driver than it is. At least I know my driving capabilities and would rather trust what I know works. Self driving cars might be a safer option for Joe Schmoe, though.

Also, I wonder what this would mean for car insurance and determining fault in the future. Since neither driver was honestly at fault, would the manufacturers be held responsible?

They don't need ot be near perfect, they just need to be better than human drivers, which will probably be the case as soon as they start hitting a more widespread commercial market.

The auto insurance industry will disappear overnight. Consumers will save THOUSANDS of dollars. It's about time this insurance scam shit ended.
