obviously there's exceptions but i'm talking about the average game

will it ever reach a point where your average game will be written better than a B list movie?

Maybe

I'd say no, because the harder they try with this the less fun they become as games.

But based on casuals tastes, it seems they'd rather just play QTE movies than actual games so maybe that's the way we are heading.

If you want a movie why not just watch one? Games are already starting to focus too much on cut scenes as it is.

what is your point, though? after people got over the animation quality, these sorts of games were total flops. literally only Dragon's Lair was commercially successful. even Bluth's other stuff (i.e., Space Ace) were not successful

That's all any QTE-heavy game, ever since, essentially is. It's just Dragon's Lair all over again, and even that kinda sucked after the "wow" novelty of it being a real cartoon wore off (or the fragile arcade hardware broke down).

No, because most writing for most mass media, is competent-yet-forgettable, or bad. Why hold video games to a higher standard? This goes double with how dev companies tend to hire a smaller creative team for writers, when theoretically, they should be hiring bigger ones to handle the main plot, but also weave the supporting details through several other aspects of the game design, to craft a more complete and immersive experience.

On average? Never. Games aren't books, and the people that want to make games aren't writers. It's the same reason why movies written by directors so often suck... just because you're good at one skill doesn't mean you automatically become good as a related skill in the same industry.

As long as game development draws talent from the pool of people that want to make games, the skillset will always be lacking in terms of writing when averaged across the industry.

I'm not?

Video games are held to a lower standard in general.

I'm asking why the bar can't be raised to match other mediums.

video games have a low standard of writing because they don't need to be high standards of writing, people eat shit up and defend it till their death if they even like it a little.

example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_u18_BKczg

"A smart game for smart gamers" shouldn't have a puzzle that is literally "identify symbol use symbol"

a game I'd say requires a modicum more of intelligence would be 999/VLR because it requires understanding of concepts you may not have heard before that do have a slightly similar grounding in reality

and for those who pay attention to this post, you'll see why games don't need a high level of writing, the hint being in my hypocrisy stating 999/vlr requires a slight modicum more of intelligence

developing that also requiring 'writing' in the same kind of sense movies and TV do btw

it is just judged by an obviously different standard since it isnt a 20 min - 3 hour experience with no interactivity...

that's what I was getting at with the 'direct writing' bit, since I feel like most people that complain about bad writing are referring to things like 'why did the characters make the bad joke with anime faces in xbc2 again' or 'why is the teenager in life is strange talking about texting like that'

and also meant films/tv that use visual storytelling more than hefty amounts of dialogue
