It sidetracks it most of the time. But doesn't actually solve the underlying issue...

Yeah, this is a very common misconception. "Depressant" isn't literal, it doesn't mean it makes you depressed, lol.

Depends what you mean by 'deal with'.

Will it help numb you to the pain and take your mind off things? Yes.

Will it help you confront your pain and get over it? No.

Alcohol is a way to push your problem down the road.

in the moment, yes. overall no.

there IS a limit though....if you take a shot or 2 too many you could go from forgetting to overly emotional, either sad or angry, if you're using it to cope with negative problems.

Real post:

It's a distraction for sure, but it kinda depends on how you are when you're drunk. The whole mythos of "mean drunk", "quiet drunk", "happy drunk", etc is fairly true. I know several people who run the whole drunk gamut. I manage to fall into the happy drunk category.

I work at a brewery and have basically unlimited access to free beer. I am drunk a lot, therefore I am happy a lot. This has affected certain aspects of my life.

I am 100% an alcoholic. I am functional, but in a kinda shitty way. I literally need alcohol to function on a basic level. Without a beer or two or a shot of whiskey or whatever, I can barely hand money to a barista at a coffee shop because my hands are shaking so badly. I can barely sign my own name on a receipt if I pay with credit at a grocery store. I am jumpy and paranoid and the slightest little touch on my body that I'm not expecting will make me noticeably jump before I've had a few.

Three beers doesn't even get me buzzed. Three beers gets me normal. I'm seriously allergic to cats, of which I have two. I found that out years later and there's no way in hell I'm getting rid of them, and the chronic cough I've had for several years due to allergic post nasal drip is tamed when I drink.

I do not tend to dwell on depressive topics when I'm intoxicated. So I guess coming back to the original question, yeah, it does help. But it varies person to person and you should really be careful with alcohol consumption.
