He has a point for some sports, to be honest. Of course becoming the best always requires tons of hard work, but there are certainly disciplines where you need suitable genes to go along with that.
A very basic example would be how the position of where muscles are attached varies from person to person. Depending on the distance to the joint, two individuals who have equally "strong" muscles will be able to generate different amounts of torque with the same amount of energy. To become the best in disciplines that are mostly about physique, you definitely need a somewhat optimal body to go along with your incredibly hard work.
