Current Events > Dumb question: Representing Zelda with 26 characters.

Here's the scenario:

I want to represent the Zelda series as much as possible.

My limit is 26 characters.

How many characters should I lift from each game?

See, I'm doing that now but I'm worried I might be showing favouritism that way. I have no fond memories of Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword, for example.

I don't think you should have a set character count from each game

Focus on the ones important to you and iconic ones which the fans latched on to.

Then throw out some obscure-ish favorites for the real fans.

Besides the prime three theres an obvious 1 or 2 additional main cast in each game. Start there.

Well for Impa at least, even if you're not a fan of the character you can't deny that she's one of the more important characters in the series. She's probably been in more games than any character but the three main ones.

Well for Impa at least, even if you're not a fan of the character you can't deny that she's one of the more important characters in the series. She's probably been in more games than any character but the three main ones.

Impa's a funny case for me. I included her in that because when people say Impa, they always mean the young, badass Impa from Ocarina of Time, Skyward Sword and Hyrule Warriors. I disagree; Impa IS iconic, but only as the elderly advisor from... almost every other appearance, as far as I'm aware.

Well young badass Impa did kind of kick off the Sheikah having a major role in the series. And of course she does return to being elderly in her most recent appearance.

Doesn't change how annoying it is when people act like those three appearances, one of which was a non-canon spin-off, define the character over the years of history elsewhere.

And these discussions were long before Breath of the Wild. I'm surprised people didn't complain Impa was back to being old in that game.

Minor or no, if you're looking at the entirety of what Zelda is as a whole, you cant deny those characters made a huge impact.

Impa, whether you like it or not, added an extra dimension of lore to the franchise that has been pivotal to multiple games in the franchise. Midna, fi, navi, and KoRL are iconic for the franchise in almost the same way Dr. Who companions are for that franchise. Hell, more often than not, these companions (wth, throw wolf link in there too) are essentially the face of that entire generation of zelda; for better or worse. Disregarding each of them is disregarding basically 5 years of Zelda history, apiece. If you're capturing the entire franchise, you can't very well leave off such a large amount just because you don't like it.

If you just want this to be a "favorite characters thing," then please, by all means. If you want it to be a full Zelda thing, you gotta bite the bullet

I'd like you to explain this in more detail, please. As I said with Impa, the character is iconic and I can accept that, I just don't like people thinking badass Impa supersedes old lady Impa.

But for the rest, I genuinely don't understand and no one seems willing to explain. Navi you could probably argue a case for since she's just a named fairy, and fairies have been a recurring concept since the first game. But I don't understand how people can call Midna, KoRL or anything like that "iconic" when they only appeared in one game in the series and were never revisited outside of Hyrule Warriors. I'd even argue Tingle is more iconic because he's a recurring character, and people despise him.

Fi might be a borderline case, since BotW reveals she's been in the Master Sword the entire time, but even that's a stretch imo.

She should get her own game.

Remember that each of those companion characters is with the player for a good 15-30 hours. If you're going to be using 26 characters (i dont think I could even name 26 different zelda characters) you might as well use them.

Or not. Art is about the expression of the artist. If you want to use iconic or popular characters, fine. But if you're not sure about fan-favorites like Midna or KoRL, then be you. Exclude them and use characters you care about to create a piece thats distinctly you.

On topic, you could throw in the goddesses and animal friends from the oracle games. >_>
