Current Events > Maybe X-Men just isn't a great story anymore? Or is it the adaptations' fault?

I'm trying to look back at every bit of adaptation of the X-Men, from the cartoons to the movies, and while some I like, and even some I really like (X-2) none of them really strike me as wow, must sees or fantastic.

Maybe the whole humans vs mutants thing needs to be dropped because it feels super played out now? Maybe get more into the mystical stuff or general fantasy/mystical/alien stuff like guardians of the galaxy or dr strange does.

I feel liked they peaked with Days of Future Past. Now that was good. I mostly enjoyed the future parts tho.

What about Logan

Logan was amazing and brilliant but I wouldn't really consider it an X-Men movie

Terrible movie. 100% plodding death march garbage. I was disinterested and bored.

Why not? X-Men movies, most of them at least, were pretty much Wolverine and friends.

Now is the time they need to tap into the more sci-fi and mystical elements of X-men lore, but they still seem too shy about it.

They keep making mistakes. They don't like to show full giant sentinels. And the newest movie is being based on a story in the comics where they went into space but in this it will be earthbound. Just cause they are too cheap to pay for space effects

It just doesn't feel like one. It feels so removed from the others. Which I think is the point. It was REALLY good. When Laura turns the cross into an X

I think it being removed from the others gave it the space it needed to be one of the only good Xmen movies lol

I think Marvel/Disney could pull off a more streamlined and enjoyable take on the X-Men. Which seems inevitable at this point.

Not only is Logan not an X-Men movie, it's not even a comic book movie. It's a dystopian semi post-apocalyptic like setting (not unlike The Road, which Logan heavily reminds me of) that just happens to have people with supernatural powers.

And I enjoyed it as its own thing, without paying attention to how it fits in with the others because the awful you-know-which movie made me finally realize they don't really give a crap about continuity or even have a well thought out plan for the series.

Wut. Just because the tone is different doesn't make it not a comic book movie. And it's still an X-Men movie imo. Same universe, same characters. It's just a good X-Men movie.

Nah. While I don't care for swearing and bloody violence, it was nice to see Wolverine actually use his claws in Logan when they gave it an r rating (similar to the director's cut of the wolverine). Same for little girl wolverine. While r ratings are not necessary to tell a story, it's nice to know that any fictional story is not constrained to try and fit a movie rating at the box office. Similarly, no use in being gratuitous with violence and swearing etc just because you have the rx rating or whatever. It's all about what the story needs without having any impositions.

Well, that's one way to look at it

Old Man Logan
Lazarus
The Walking Dead
Hulk's Maestro stories

All comics set in a dystopian post apocalyptic setting. A different type of story/setting doesn't mean it isn't a comic book movie. Literally the only qualifier is "based on a comic". Guess what? 300 and V for Vendetta are CBM as well.
Might as well claim Preacher isn't a comic book show because no one is wearing tights.

These are my thoughts almost exactly. I'd say The Road and video games like The Last of Us and the Walking Dead do it better, but Logan is still quite competently done. I felt the superheroic moments in Logan were actually the weakest ones in the movie, and felt really out of place with the rest of the setting and tone.

From a larger continuity perspective, it feels like there should have been an X-Men film set in the restored future created by Days. X2 is probably the best the series has ever been, and the Days ending is as close as we've gotten to that in over a decade. Show us what a fully realized emotionally functional X-Team/Logan looks like before you go and break it again so we can appreciate what it is we've lost in Logan.
