All gems are worthless when you get down to it, diamonds just have the distinction of being strong enough to cut through other rocks. Their only worth is in vanity.

Finally, we can literally make diamonds in a lab now. A lot of the time its the man made diamonds that are used in commercial purposes. And these artificial diamonds are better quality than these "rare" natural diamonds. The whole diamond industry is a scam. :/ --- How often do people read this? ... Copied to Clipboard!

All gems are worthless I know what you mean, but they aren't "worthless". they *are* rare and *do* have applications beyond being rare and shiny. the fact that there are synthetic gems kind of ruins it though. --- The truth basks in scrutiny. http://i.imgur.com/GMouTGs.jpg http://projecteuler.net/profile/Sahuagin.png ... They are not rare. The suppliers just hide the supply and trick people with marketing.

Diamonds are just worthless carbon under conditions that can be recreated in labs (and better. The best lab diamonds will look better and be cheaper than the best natural ones. The industry just tries very very hard to make sure as few people as possible know this, and convince the rest that natural ones are still "better").
Since converting elements is still extremely hard to do, actual rare elements (eg: platinum) are still valuable. Gems like diamonds? A scam. I got my wife a diamond ring back when we got married, but we've discussed it at length in the last couple of years: if we had known better, it would have been a ring with a moissanite stone. Looks arguably better and is much cheaper. Spend the money you save on a nicer honeymoon, or in a ring with more rare metal that has actual value. ... Copied to Clipboard!
