I asked him what his deal was and he asked me if I was drinking. I told him I was and then he asked me if I was worried about being an alcoholic. Now I was super fucking confused by this because my dad has seriously never shown any interest in me. He hates me, I hate him, we love my mom and that's what makes us co-exist as peacefully as possible.

So I told him no and asked why he asked me that. And he said that he just wishes someone would've asked him that when he first started heavily drinking. He shook his head and walked out.

Now, I drink on the weekends and for fun. I don't drink to escape problems or any negative reason. I work my 25 - 30 hours a week and handle my business, then get drunk when I want to.

This mother fucker (my mom to be specific) used to drink Jameson like water, couldn't hold a job, abused me and my mom, and was just a general piece of shit. He's been sober for 16 years but prior to that were 14 hard, long years of my life dealing with that drunk piece of shit and he wants to come in here and start with his passive aggressive bullshit knowing full and goddamn well that I am more together than he ever could be? Fuck him. He only has the life he has because my mom is a goddamned beast, works her ass of, and keeps him around for some goddamn reason. Maybe he has a big dick or eats good pussy or something but he's nothing without her and he wants to run his mouth to me smh.

SMH.

If not, you might be better served to get out on your own. I have a toxic father as well and the best thing I ever did for myself was getting away from him.

Why can't your dad be legitimately concerned about you? Because he was a bad dad during his addiction? Why can't he of had a revelation and actually care now? Maybe he hates what he was so much that the thought of you going down the same path is his worst fear now. Maybe he started off drinking the exact way you do now until some traumatic event happened and made him rely on alcohol until he had no control over his own life

TL;DR

TCs dad asks him if he has a drinking problem, TC is 30, doesn't seem to work full time, and states that he drinks regularly, TC gets offended and makes a blogfaqs rant and admits he is drunk.

Tbh it sounds to me like he did a good thing for you right there, not bad. He saw warning signs that you could be heading down the same path as him, and he felt like he ought to spend some time with you to try and help you not go down that route. Maybe he feels awkward around you because of what's happened in the past, but at least he tried. He probably walked out shaking his head because it reminded him of his own past, and doesn't want that to happen to you aswell.

This. My father was also an angry drunk while I was growing up and only started to feel sorry for his ways when I was already an adult and out of the house.

I can't say that's exactly what's going on with your dad, but it's possible he's worried.

My mom's house? Not any time soon. I don't pay rent or utilities and I'm generally very frugal, so I save up most of my money. If it ever becomes necessary I can and will do so but my mom has told me there's no rush. I don't plan to get married and I have the whole upstairs to myself so it doesn't hamper my social life. Really no reason not to live here as long as possible.

No. This has been my routine since I was legal drinking age. I've never gotten in trouble from my drinking, never missed work, never had relationship problems, and I've suffered no ill health effects from it. I'm sure some of you are just taking the piss out of me but ponder the possibility that someone with a terrible drunk for a father actually learns something from that instead of repeating the cycle. There's a vast ocean (of alcohol) between me and alcoholism.

It's not his choice, which also makes me want to stick around. He'd love to if my mom didn't completely own him. This is her house and he's powerless. I'm here to stay.
