Heck, I had a full-tower PC hooked up next to my bed, for years, and that was my primary work machine.

Well, I mean like while laying down - like at a phone or other device.

If I were to use a laptop I'd just begrudgingly work at the desktop.

Get a drawing tablet and move your computer monitor next to your bed.

Nope. Best way I've got is to get one of those lap desks and make sure you're using a mouse, but even then it's a lot more work than sitting down at a real desk.

use an actual sketchbook in bed, transfer ideas to desktop later

You should look out for one of those stand-up computer workstations that are typically used at hospitals. Then you could just wheel it close to the bed and hopefully make the monitor lean in closer to the bed so that you don't have to twist yourself to see it.
