Remarkably, her tutor, known only as Dr K, didn't believe this was an acceptable choice for the project.

"Australia is a continent; it is not a country," the tutor wrongly explained via email.

"That error made it nearly impossible for you to accurately complete your week 2 research outline correctly."

Fortunately, after the student contested, the tutor realized his mistake and corrected the grade.

The worst part is that he didn't realize his mistake. He just ceded that she had grounds on which to base her paper but he never outright explained that he was wrong or apologized or anything.

Because it's a college professor who literally didn't and probably still does not understand that Australia is a country... and he's teaching Sociology.

My 10th grade world geography teacher tried to tell us that a normal year has 366 days and a leap year has 365 days. According to her, it's called a leap year because you're "leaping past the last day."

I think it's kind of bullshit that the media runs news stories about people who mess up one little thing in their job one time out of the 2,000+ hours people put into their jobs a year.

Everyone makes mistakes at their job. Welcome to reality.

This mistake cost the school a bit of money as the tuition was refunded to the student as a result. Also it reduces the school's credibility that they hire a professor who doesn't understand basic geographical concepts.

The assignment was essentially "compare the US to another country". Maybe he should have thought "Why did she choose a continent instead of a country?" and did a five second precursory search to realize it's both, instead of failing her instantly for a "fundamentally flawed work".

It also brings into question that specific professor's work ethic and ability to do his job (aka, grade papers).
