I was holding a contest to give away my 20% PS Store coupon and the only catch was that I asked people not to downvote it, because, well, people on that subreddit downvote topics all the time for no good reason so I wanted to see if people could resist long enough for someone to win.

Within 5 minutes, someone had downvoted it. Shortly after that, I was perma-banned from the subreddit for "vote manipulation".

I could understand if I had asked people to upvote it, but asking them to simply not downvote it results in being permanently banned? Seems pretty harsh.

Except that nowhere on the vote manipulation rule page does it say you cannot ask people not to downvote something.

So you're complaining you got banned for vote manipulation because somehow asking people to not vote doesn't count as manipulation?
This is a joke, right?

Vote manipulation is influencing others to vote a certain way which is what you did. A permanent ban is pretty harsh but that was vote manipulation regardless of your intentions

Except I didn't ask people to vote a certain way. They didn't have to vote at all.

That's fine, and that's exactly what happened, but do I really deserve to be permanently banned because of it?

guys, he just said to people to leave the post alone and don't mess with it. he specicially begged for no down votes so that the post would stay up. but he didn't ask for up votes. it's not manipulation. he just wanted people to be nuetral

Typically, when someone manipulates someone else, it's to get something out of it. I would have not gained anything if people simply had not voted.

You can try to argue the semantics of technically not telling them to vote a certain way but this is most definitely vote manipulation

Obviously Reddit thinks it is and those of us who spend the effort to think about it have come to the same conclusion. The act of asking people to not vote is a form of vote manipulation by virtue of it involving someone manipulating you to limit your votes.
This is not a hard concept to grasp and I think it serves as a great litmus test in gauging critical thinking skills in people.

I don't even see any posted rules about vote manipulation in their rules:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PSVR/wiki/rules

To me it's a bit ticky tacky to call what TC asked for outright vote manipulation, certainly not worthy of a permanent ban. To me, vote manipulation would be obvious botting of his own posts, begging for upvotes, brigading, etc.
