I have never seen the Pursuit of Happiness but I have seen Seven Pounds and the highly underrated Six Degrees of Seperation and they are great.

I also never played Doki Doki because it looked like it was trying too hard and is not my thing.

However people who have played it absolutely rage out when I say that and one of them astutely pointed out that it's free and kinda hypocritical of me considering I questioned why so many won't give Life Is Strange a chance despite the fact it is free and beloved.

So I have them right here. Doki Doki just downloaded or I got a DVD to watch.

I watched the Pursuit of Happyness [sic] and it wasn't all that. It just a biographic movie about some homeless dude.

DDLC at least is a fun thing to go through.

DDLC has some of the most god awful writing I've seen - it makes anime appear sophisticated in comparison. It's as if it was written by a 12 year old with bad social skills. The scary parts are about as scary as a blue screen and the characters are beyond cringey. This game will be forgotten just like that dad-dating meme game was forgotten.

Save yourself the boredom and watch the The Pursuit of Happiness instead. I have not actually watched that movie but I can say, without hesitation, it is the better choice.

Plus, the main character being horribly inept and oblivious is basically a staple in most of these dating VNs.

I think he wrote Sayori well though. I have a feeling he has a friend who is like her or someone similar. She felt the most real to me.

Eh, maybe I've just been desensitized by all the anime and visual novels I've gone through, but FF9 doesn't feel very weeb-y to me to begin with.

And the biggest issue with playing DDLC now is that it does something different, except everyone knows it does something different rather than it being a surprise. It's the sort of thing where the impact is greater if you like that kind of romance visual novel.

Well maybe so but as SGT_Conti implied I've never played a dating sim before.

Unless you count Mass Effect. But Shepard isn't really inept he's just got the sex drive of a mouldy lemon wherein he only has sex if there is a strong chance he will die tomorrow.

Sayori was saying exactly how I felt through high school so she was definitely the most real character to me. Everyone else is deliberately an overdone trope.

There are usually two kinds of protagonists in bishojo games and they're either:
1) Shy, somewhat oblivious, anxious men that the target demographic can relate to, and still somehow manages to draw the attention of every attractive woman in their vicinity or
2) Hypercompetent power fantasies that the target demographic wishes they were and are suave enough to sweep every attractive woman in their vicinity off their feet.

I played up until the point where I went to visit that girl who is depressed and the other girl came round my house to make decorations.

Had to stop there for now.

So far I'm just kinda bored and I hate the music, when I go back I'm probably going to mute the music.

I'll see If the game picks up later.

So restarted

The girl killed herself and the game lectured me for not saving her.

Now the game has restarted without her and deleted all my saves.

Kinda feel bad for giving my character a stupid name now >_>

So I beat the game.

Meh.

I think they went too far with the 2spooky4me stuff. It was super weird that they spent ages just acting like it was a normal Dating sim and then the second the girl kills herself they go flat out all out spooky glitches and nonsense instantly.

Would have been better if they either

1. Didn't take so long to get going

or

2. After having such a dull slow boil, keep it up. The other girls acting like the dead girl never existed and some minor creepy stuff for a while would have worked.

As a result it just wasn't creepy or scary and just felt really tryhardy.

I mean for example that bit at the end might have worked if the character didn't repeatedly smash it over your head to delete the file and telling you step by step how to do it over and over again. That could have been a neat puzzle if it was just hinted at.

And then the ending was disappointing. I'm assuming there's a secret "true" happy ending if you make better decisions but I just don't really care.

I mean it was free so I can't complain but it's really not my thing
