Rate them!

First one I tried my damnedest to paint along with Bob Ross and prepped my canvas as he recommended.

2nd one I had lots of extra paint already out so I wanted to use as much of it up as I could.

good news is the link of my first painting is Hype3 which is pretty awesome if I do say so myself.

first one in actual painting time took about an hour. but i put black down for the water/cliff before i started so that took like 90 minutes to dry before I could start painting.

2nd one took 20 minutes.

I think if I take titanium white and lots of matte medium I can effectively lay down "liquid white" like Bob Ross does and that should improve my blending effects.

I think on the water I put way too much of the brush on the canvas. watching bob ross like 3 bristles would be on the canvas. I had all the bristles on the canvas. So I think water requires a much lighter touch.

also I put transparent colors down for the water/cliff but it dried by the time I put the other color down so with acrylics I can't do it all as prep, I have to do it in sections.

i assume you have done watercolors before

that is my only painting experience before. I did maybe 5 water color paintings back in 1995 for the last art class I took in 7th grade.

Ah

You sound like you retained quite a bit tbh reading how you set everything up first
IIRC you can't really layer transparent paint with acrylic

im no painter but i know things about painting (i draw and write)
the best way (at least, as i was taught) is to get your lighter colors down first, then put darker ones on top
work opaque
if you need a lighter shade mix in white

I started taking an acrylic painting class, 3 sessions in. so far its just been how to make colors from your primary colors + white and black, shading, blending and how acrylics are as a medium.

I wanted to be able to paint along with bob ross so I'm trying to use acrylics to do oil techniques so I'm having to change up how I do some things. Bob does "wet on wet" which you can't really do with acrylics but I'm trying to find ways to make it work.

And yeah, the layering transparent with acrylic is definitely the biggest difficulty of the medium so im having to like figure out some way to get the effects bob does but with a different material so yeah.

I mean you are largely right on transparencies with acrylics as I understand it now. acrylics do have transparent or opaque colors like oils but the mediums are different. so if I want to copy the techniques bob ross does I need to do something else that doesn't really maximize acrylics as a medium but dammit, I want to paint with bob!
