If you need that much space then it makes no sense to go with a single drive. Buy an array and RAID 5/6 that shit.

Why would it not make sense? A 250 gb external hdd made sense 10 years ago, without need to raid an array, so 10 years later it's surprising 250 tb external hdd hasn't entered the market yet.

So it's better to have them spread out over multiple storage devices? Kinda defeats the purpose of a storage device not to mention the convenience, but I get it in that regard.

No. The array will present itself to your OS as one big drive. If you have an array with (4) 1TB drives in it, your OS will see (1) 4TB partition.
