I've been vegan for about 2 and a half months now. as someone who mostly used to eat meat, dairy, and junk food, I gotta say I'm surprised at the quality of a lot of the meat-free and dairy-free stuff out there.

I had been a flexitarian for years, pretty much only having meat on special occasions/social outings. I thought it would be too hard to avoid meat in a social context and the random cravings, so I never gave it an honest try beyond past Veganuaries. This year, however, I've made it permanent.

It's really quite effortless if you really want to do it. I don't eat many of the big meat substitutes like tofu or seitan but I do get creative with seasoning and have turned farro, beans, mushrooms, and other things into their own unique replacements.

The only cheese replacement I've gone with is the "noocho cheese" but I was never big on dairy to begin with, so I've not tried anything else out.

I did it for health reasons primarily but the cruelty and environmental impact has been on my mind for half my life. I just finally put it all together and stopped being a hypocrite.

Prepare to have people be really hostile to you now that you've shared that.

I have been vegan for almost 7 months now. Never a shortage of good food. At this point, I can't look at meat without associating it with the corpse that it is and the life it took. So I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything but the extra cruelty.

no but I will probably will be one day. I've given up dairy entirely except for cheese at times. I like almond milk more than regular milk plus it's better for you. i've been trying to eat meat less and maybe eat maybe half as much as I used to. I tried a few imitation meat products and some of them taste and feel identical to the meat they're imitating (not tofu tho, because that sorta hollows out and doesn't feel like meat, not that it matters much but yea)

yeah i noticed that before I went vegan. And since, gosh, it's annoying. I'm in dozens of vegan groups. Everyone is so dang nice and supportive of people even reducing meat intake. There sure are some annoying people, but I've noticed they're almost all plant accounts. People stirring shit and pinning it on vegans even though that isn't a person (and probably not a vegan). it's weird.

1. Vegans won't eat eggs because they come from an animal.

2. Nope can't agree with that. The kid should be allowed to CHOOSE what they want to eat, not be forbidden from eating something simply because their parents say no...

Don't get me wrong, if the parents only make vegan meals for the kids at home and they are being properly nutritionally cared for so be it.

But they should not be allowed to simply ban meat from their children because they want to.

It's like a religious person trying to force religion on their children (arguably, not as bad as vegans forcing their believes though)

dude if my parents had raised me vegan and then offered me the choice of eating meat/eggs/dairy, if i knew at all that it hurt animals for that and I didn't need to eat it, i would have said NO. My friends raised vegetarian have said the same: they are glad they didn't have meat eating habits forced on them and they had the option to choose meat and didn't. They never have and never will.

if you start off feeding kids meat that choice is made for them by the parents. They have to opt-out later, instead of opting-in to the meat-eating club.

Let me tell you a quick story as an example:

I was a chipotle and saw a family of 4. The younger girl (around 8 or so) said she wanted to try the taco meat. The parents immediately told her that she is not allowed to eat the taco meat and she knows that, then they ordered her the sofritas even though she didn't want it.

THAT pissed me off.

I honestly had to bite my tongue to prevent me from saying something to those parents.

like believing you need to eat meat to be healthy? or believing it is ethical to kill other sentient beings for the pleasure of their flesh?

most parents will not allow their children to commit unethical acts when possible. by feeding your child meat you are pushing a set of ethics on that child. they may happen to be commonly held values in some places, or a belief you hold, but it is forcing beliefs on children all the same.
