The internet.

Before codes were sold to game magazines. Then people bypassed the magazine and looked them up online. Now companies have no incentive to implement codes.

Being able to sell them to you is one thing but it's not all cynical. Online multiplayer is another thing.

And really cheats have historically existed largely because developers don't actually want to have to actually beat their hard-as-hell 80's games in order to fully test. Since super hard mode is like 80's normal, that's not really needed anymore either.

Do you only play Kirby or something? Games in the 80s were only difficult because people were either literal children or grossly inexperienced with gaming as a whole.

Advances in programming.

Half the point of cheat codes was for developers to gain access to the game in a way that lets them be baddies yet still do a full playthrough to work out the bugs in real time, instead of the ability to warp/insert themselves at certain points in the game.

Funny thing about Battletoads, I never thought that vehicle section was that tough. I mean sure it killed me a few times but the following levels were much harder to me.

I think it only happened on the "next gen" version for 360, and the PC version was considered part of the old gen.

Kirby was hard? Thats the only game I ever perfected in my life. I could play the entire game without taking a single point of damage.

Nah. Games were harder back then. They were also very short. A game's longevity was made by making it really fucking hard and making you start over from the beginning if you die too many times.

I know Ubisoft does that. Funny thing is, in Assassins Creed Rogue it's possible to use the infinite health code to beat the final extra hard Legendary Ship battle, then immediately disable the cheat and the game will think you did it legitimately causing the trophy to pop. Maybe devs are concerned about glitches like that. >__>
