Why are these a thing? Seems like these things have really blown up and become one of the most popular things to sell in stores these days (even GameStop has a section of them now) and I just dont see the appeal of them. Are they supposed to be cute or something?

They're supposed to be cute and easy to collect. In reality, they are cheap crap. Ugly and a waste of plastic.

They're very cheap and sold everywhere.

I've stopped buying them and just buy statues of the characters I really want.

God, this.
I noticed a Gamestop a few towns over actually has the brand name on the front window now. Like seriously, it's larger than their own signage on the door. My only guess is that much like how those worthless baby boomers were drawn to those hideous troll dolls as teens/young adults in the 60s, millennials are drawn to these hideous things now.
Yet another similarity between America's most horrendous generations.

Considering the high quality figures start at $30-50 and nicer statues $100+,yes $9-12 for a small 4-6in figure is cheap.

They are cheap and they can be made for nearly every series. I used to have a bunch of Game of Thrones ones back when it was in like Season 2. I don't really by them much anymore, but there are a few cult series that I saw (Bill and Ted, Rocky Horror, etc) where I was super tempted.

Collectibles are investments tbh. You'd be surprised how much some of the rarer ones go for.

I never collected these except a Powergirl one I got for $2 on Amazon because there's just too many, but so many people laugh at figures and shit like that but I'm almost sitting on $200k of collectibles just from the past 2-3 years.

This isn't true with funko pops. The only rare ones are the ones you can get at cons. The funko pops that you can get at Newbury Comics, Hot Topic, Target or the like are practically worthless since they're printed in such high quanitity. Even chase figures are nonsense when companies like Newbury Comics charge more for them.

I think the aesthetic is mostly charming. I agree they are very abundant and so some are designed badly, or not recognizable, but the ones I have/like are distinct enough.

In addition, they represent some of the only merch for many shows. I like that I can have a shelf of unified toys that contain representatives from everything I like.

(I have 19 funkos)

There are more rare ones aside from the cons, but the cons seem to go for way more. Seen one listed @ $500, while other rares go for $50-$100 or so.

I collect serial killers only, or people who have killed irl including self.

Cobain is on pre-order wearing his teen spirit gear

Aside from that, only Evil Dead because I love it.

If I come across a rare I sell it. Unless its not getting me enough, then I wait.

I live in the state with their HQ, and it's worth it to look around.

I like Funko's (Have a couple Deadpool's and a Marvin the Martian) but I find they're actually more popular among parents as stocking stuffers or smaller birthday presents than actual 16-25 year olds.

The reason why should be obvious when you go into a Comic/Collectible store and compare them to the actual detailed action figures.

I don't care how much you love your kid, very few parents that aren't loaded beyond comprehension will buy their kids a $200 Deadpool figure. Funko's are generally the cheap alternative.

There's plenty of non-con ones that go for anywhere from 2x-10x the price. That's still an insane ROI.

Yeah I get that. I'm talking about any other figure brand really. There's plenty of the nerdy shit like superheroes, Star Wars or Disney.

But Funko Pops cover almost every major TV show and movie. Sometimes it's really niche or random stuff that hasn't been relevant for ages. Like the Log Lady on Twin Peaks or Roger Rabbit.
