https://www.businessinsider.com.au/air-force-one-new-refrigerators-cost-24-million-2018-1

In December, the Air Force awarded Boeing a contract to replace two chillers, or refrigerators, on Air Force One for a total cost of $US23,657,671.

The Air Force requires that the current air chillers in the G12 and G13 galleys be modified with new cold food stowage to improve reliability and maintainability with an expected completion date of Oct. 30, 2019, the contract notice states.

But, according to Marcus Weisgerber of Defence One, the high cost isnt a defence-contractor boondoggle, but rather its indicative of the high standards and high costs of operating Air Force One.

Trump McDonald's
Instagram
The presidential jet, which must be able to serve as a mobile national command center, needs to carry enough food for weeks at a time without resupply up to 3,000 meals.

I get it's a plane and that there's a high quality demand there. But there's no way I'm buying that 2 refrigerators cost $24 million.

Of course it's a contract with Boeing, so I'm pretty certain they are just overcharging since it's not like the US will go look somewhere else for a better deal.

Unrelated, I find it hilarious the article used a picture of Trump eating McDonald's on the plane. Could they really not find a better picture?

This is probably Boeing charging whatever they feel like because they're the only ones contractually allowed to touch the jet.

Didn't Trump turn down a contract with them for a new AFO to the tune of a few billion or something because he thought we didn't need a new one? Maybe this is their way of getting back/

I have no idea, though I don't think this is really revenge. They probably would of charged us this amount regardless, because it's not like we won't pay it.

But yeah, it's a huge problem that only 1 contractor is essentially allowed to touch certain contracts which just causes huge amount of wasteful spending.

Those refrigerators better be capable of flash freezing for that kind of price.

They could of just used any picture of the plane. Trump didn't have to be in the picture. It's just more the fact the article is about getting these high quality refrigerators that can store 3000 meals and the example of a meal they are giving us is McDonald's.

I doubt CE understands exactly how big a fridge we're talking here. Not saying that justifies the cost but I guarantee you even if they bid it out the cost would be in the millions

Why would they need that much for refrigerators to hold weeks worth of McDonald's when that shit doesn't rot anyways? Those fridges would probably last forever if they were encased in a giant Big Mac.

AFO is designed from the ground up to fly, in ideal non-apocalyptic settings, indefinitely through strategic refueling while in the air.

It isn't exactly surprising that it's refrigerators cost that much

I'm sure they would of costed a lot, especially since uninstalling the old refrigerators and the installing the new refrigerators would of costed a lot in labor as is. I just don't buy $12 million for each.

I don't care how big it is it still better be able to flash freeze stuff for the amount of money it's worth.

It's lucrative af and it's easy. Took HVAC as a tech elective in college and it was literally reading tables and doing simple algebra. I work with heaters and exhaust systems in my job and it seems straightforward enough (but I just buy their systems for my projects).

You still have to consider uninstalling the old ones and reinstalling the new ones. Considering the 3000 meal demands and that this is a plane. Labor would be most of the cost.

It's really not fair to compare a fridge in the home to a fridge on Air Force One.

I've always been fascinated by air force one. It can also refuel mid flight, essentially flying indefinitely unless it has to land for quick maintenance.

Of course it's not.

On the other hand, you can buy nearly 2 ERJ140s for the cost of those fridges.

From a carpenters perspective.... As far as the building trades plumbers and HVAC guys kill it.

Also I just recently found out electricians pay blows. I make more than a third year electrician and while I know more than plenty of third year carpenters I don't have any schooling directly related to carpentry

As for Trump... Ive said before that Im not a fan of big taxes. I think its inevitable that it gets misused like that.

The issue is more that the military only goes to one company for contracts for specific things. Which gives the company a lot of power to overcharge. If the military was allowed to shop for contracts, we would get deals that better reflect the actual cost.

But it's not like our government is going to fight against the military complex consider both parties are pretty complacent is letting our military budget grow due to wasteful spending on overcharged contracts.
