I think I'm gonna peep it tonight, but I have a feeling that it's gonna be one of those pretentious Oscar-bait movies with no plot that's just riding on the fact that it's an LGBT movie.

Aight, well looks like there's a 6:55 showing at a theater like 15 minutes from me, so I'll probably check it out and report back.

That's on my list, hopefully I get to it before the theaters around me quit showing it.

1. Blade Runner 2049
2. Call Me By Your Name
3. Dunkirk
4. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
5. Get Out

i enjoyed get out but i only saw it in december and it was extremely overhyped for me. people were going on about how it was the best ever film. it was great but my hopes were too high

I think I'll have to see it again. That was either really good or really bad, and I honestly can't determine which, but it's definitely one or the other.

I kinda fucked up buying my ticket though, and I wonder if it impacted my enjoyment of the film. I'd never been to this theater before and I bought my reserved seat online, and the seating layout looked really fucked up, like all the seats were off to the side except for row C, the frontmost row. I figured with it being C, it would be a decent way away from the screen. Nope, it was right next to the screen, so I was reclined back and still looking at a weird angle.

I honestly can't say. I liked Moonlight a little bit, but not nearly as much as critics. I'd give Moonlight a solid 6/10, whereas this was either like a 3/10 or a 8-9/10.

Maybe I just need to sleep on it. Honestly, I thought the ending was incredible and really allowed me to put the rest of the movie in a larger context, but there was a lot of the "rest of the movie" that I thought meandered way too much.

I honestly think this might be what's conflicting me. It really muddied an otherwise touching overarching theme.

Like the kid isn't super young at 17, but the other dude is quite a bit older.

Is that how older Oliver was supposed to be? For some reason I thought Armie Hammer was pushing 40 rather than 31, not to mention he looks quite a bit older.

i don't think it's really that simple, a seven age difference can be huge at this point in life.

Yeah, I think for me it was more that I felt Oliver to be much more mature than Elio, and as a result his behavior felt more... predatory.

I wish the author would have just made him 18 so that we wouldn't have to have this stupid conversation.

If Elio was a few months older, nobody would have any issue with it. There is nothing magical about the age of 18. The planets don't align on your 18th birthday, turning you into a man. The number is just set for legal reasons (because there has to be a cutoff date), but societies all around the world have agreed that late teens is when people are mature enough to make decisions about their sexuality. In Europe, that legal number is a couple years lower, which makes Americans uncomfortable. At the end of the day though, I was just as much of an adult at 17 as I was at 18. Nothing about the romance in the movie was predatory. There was no power-dynamic, and everything was about as consensual as it could possibly be.

Power dynamics are WHY sex crimes are a crime. One party is incapable of consent. It can be because they are too young to grasp the situation, or it could be that one party is in a position of power over the other (employer, etc.).

People mature sexually at different ages, and governments have to set an age whereby it can safely be assumed that all individuals have reached that point. Obviously, that is subjective, but pretty much all societies have decided that late teens are when that happens. Whether or not that number is set at 17 or 18 really just depends on the jurisdiction you are in. Even within the US it varies and goes even lower.

Both individuals in this story were fully aware of what was going on, and were capable of consent.

You are obviously going to have a maturity difference when one participant is experiencing love for the first time. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, and you can see that in relationships WITHOUT an age gap. The fact is, there was nothing abusive or manipulative about the relationship, and if he were a few months older, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

I would, at least. In the beginning of the film, Oliver knew it wasn't a good idea, but eventually went along with it anyway. I'm not saying it was nonconsensual, but it did give me a weird feeling.

Who knows, though. I'll probably try and see the film again in a week or two if it's still playing near me to see if my attitude changes.

There were multiple reasons for his hesitation. Yes, the age gap was a factor, but I think it was more so because they are both male (in the 1980s no less) and he is his employer's son.

I have said pretty much all I have to say on the matter. I will just leave this quote from the director which I think sums it up.

Q: In light of the current scandals about sexual harassment and sexual abuse of minors, how do you respond to the discomfort with your film's central relationship?

A: The percentage of criticism that has come from those who have seen the film, related to what you just said, I would say is 1 percent. The best answer I can give is: Go and see the film, and judge for yourself whether the sexuality is uncomfortable. Having said that, there was a great review of the film by Anthony Lane in the New Yorker that said, in effect, that this movie is the antidote to the climate in which we are living, a climate in which power is a weapon used to crush other people and to exert the violence of your impulses. "Call Me by Your Name" is about consensual desire, discovery and a completely un-power-related relationship.

Of the BP nominees so far (I'm hoping to get to all of them), I've only seen Get Out, Darkest Hour, and Call Me By Your Name. I'd rank them in that order, as well.

Moonlight I thought was decent, but shouldn't have won BP. Of the nominees last year, I thought Manchester by the Sea was by and far the best film.

I still haven't seen Phantom Thread or Darkest Hour, so I can't rate all of them against each other quite yet.
