Me and another college student rent a room in our landlord's house. She and her husband are really nice. They've cooked us food multiple times before so I'm shocked they do this. But I've noticed they turn the thermostat off when they're not home. So if it's in the summer it'll get uncomfortably hot and in the winter get cold. Not a problem when they're home of course. I want to just text them something like "Hey does our rent not cover the AC/heating? "

I can't believe they do that to save a few bucks.

Offer to cost share the heating/cooling bill in exchange for control while they're gone.

Nah it's not that cold. It'll get below 40 though and it'll get uncomfortably cold if they turn the thermostat off. Ive also seen it get up to 80 when they're gone but back to 77 when they get back. I just texted her asking if she'd like me to pay more for electric to keep it on all day.

That's a potentially stupid thing to do in the winter too. You won't be saving any money when your pipes freeze and burst.

IANAL but that sounds probably illegal. Landlords have to supply heat/ac depending on the temp outside and depending on the jurisdiction. Of course, they can charge you for it, but they can't just say "lol no heat for you".

It is weird for them to turn it completely off. I do turn it down in the winter/summer when I'm gone, though.

Yeah I asked that because of the pipes thing but I figured they wouldn't do that if it was too cold so I just deleted the post >_>

She texted me back saying I can turn it on. Said she turned it off because she wasn't sure if I liked the AC/heating on. Uh yeah sure...

They probably won't be switching it off every morning they leave for work now.
