It is just kind of unsettling to me because I grew up with religion. But on the bright side anytime I feel sad or depressed Ill remember that its just another cycle with the chemicals in my brain lol.

That makes no sense. Having an explanation makes it as real as anything. Do you expect it to be magic?

Happiness, sadness.. okay, but that's basic stuff.

What's worse is knowing that love, your world view, basically everything that makes you who you are is just a result of chemicals too. Change those chemicals and you can change any of those things.

Makes sense how so many people fall victim to drugs, but even then the body and brain have so many "fail safes" in place to basically protect you from yourself. It's pretty insane.

Pretty much this. Everything, down to what we feel and describe in poetry and works of art, as romantic as it all is, boils down to just chemicals in our brain. Hell, what even is a personality. What defines a person.

Well, the idea of spirituality is to counter your notion here.

That is, pleasure =/= happiness.

Infact, you see people who are drugged up generally aren't happy despite taking chemicals that tell their brain it is feeling pleasure or suppresses pain.
Alchohol drowns your sorrows. Does getting drunk make you happy? no.
While you are drunk you might think you are, but then you are soon sober.

So how is happiness a chemical thing?
Happiness comes from actively accepting what is your lot in life. The bhuddist principle basically was this. Getting more things and being rich didn't make you happy. Drugging yourself out didn't make you happy. Even being successful, famous, etc; doesn't make happiness.

Happiness is something you have to create into your thought process.
Infact, most don't understand happiness.
For instance, you can be happy while frowning or having a neutral look on your face. You can be content in a prison or while persecuted. Your body chemicals would not reflect this.

Society says, "smile! laugh!" and if you don't "what is wrong!?". But that is not happiness.
