It's the first game I remember being the one that changed the spells from being stuff like "Fire/Fire2/Fire3" to "Fire/Fira/Firaga." What the fuck was that.

That being said, when I played it as a teen, I felt like, "Oh man, this game gets me and my complex emotions!"

How would you play a paper version of the card game IRL? You have to flip them for colors, but then your opponent can see which cards you have in your hand if it's on the back as well as the front.

Look, the gameplay in FF8 is dogshit. The story is dogshit. The characters are dogshit.

The game goes down easy if you think of it as a card game with an optional story mode.

I kinda like the ra ga ja naming tbh, but I don't understand why they changed the names for the rereleases of the older games going forward. Like FF4 Advance and FF6 Advance. Should have left the 2 3 names for those.

Don't forget the awesome world and soundtrack that's fucked off not only by the bad story but the shitty characters.

It's hated because it had incredible potential.

bufu = ice
garu = wind
zio = electricity
-lao/la/nga = somewhat powerful
-dyne = very powerful
ma- = hits all enemies
you should really be able to tell from experience

The only reason why those were ever a thing was due to character limits. FFVII just copied the trend due to it's well known poor localization. It was always intended to be -ra and -ga.

Half the time even using them gave you no indication of what they did.

I used a gameshark to instantly level up and was like "WTF is going on?" my first time through.

I'll say this though: the soundtrack was pretty good and the environments were pretty cool.
