there are only 2 goddamn early shifts and yet one of them happens to always be off.

Depending on the circumstances, I'd just leave when I'm scheduled to leave and let the higher up deal with shit not getting done due to the other person's absence. Working for salary instead of hourly is so silly.

2. do you have the ability to get a decent amount of sleep

if the answer is yes to both of those questions, why should you care? unless you're salary, it just gives you more money. and its not like they're calling in you on your day off. you're already at work, so a couple more hours literally doesn't matter.

you'd have been working that day anyway, so if you're the time that needs to mentally prepare yourself to work for the day, you should've already done that.

now if you were called in to work a 12 hour shift on your day off, then maybe you'd have a case to complain, but as it is, you're literally just complaining about money in your pocket.

Then why are you taking the OT? The higher ups can grant him sick days/hours, but they can't force you to work OT. Tell them you have prior obligations, simple.

we're both hourly but he's using sick leave so he's not losing any money.

He accrues sick leave I assume, so its fair for him to use it whenever. He can only use so much so its his time to burn, nothing telling a supervisor would change.

I work for the city and am in the same boat. Sucks I have to stay late/come in early but least I get overtime.

No, I personally would say nothing. Speaking up never goes over well in these scenarios, and it sounds like a shitty place to work anyway. I've found in life, sometimes you need to suck it up and ride out the bullshit to achieve greater things. It says a lot about the person who is always there to cover versus the person who always needs days off and have schedule conflict. It really just depends on where you want to go with this job and your future.

I have a better one for you though, our store closed last week one day due to inclement weather and I got paid for it, so my boss asks me if I'm gonna make those 8 hours up in overtime this week. Actually she expected that I do it. That was a big hell no. I don't control the God damn weather

Some people like over time and that's fine but not me. I want to work my five days and spend as much time away from work as I can. Going in on one of my only two off days is just not in the cards
