I was watching the great teacher Onizuka live action series on Crunchyroll. Im enjoying it, but Im not going to lie, the acting makes me cringe pretty hard sometimes lol.

Is this common in Japanese live action?

What? Japanese actors can act just as well as anyone else. 13 assassins, Zatoichi etc. are awesome movies.

I think there's just a different standard of acting quality over there, mang. A lot of the times, the humor doesn't really hit either. But I'll be damned if I wasn't in tears nearly every episode of the original GTO series.

When you say the original GTO seres, do you mean the anime or the original live action?

Japan has fantastic actors but you're not going to find them in live action adaptations of anime and J dramas.

Because their definition of "good" acting is campy over the top acting. It translate well in anime, but it's miles terrible live action.

Actually, that is a bad example because "City Hunter" starring Jackie Chan is far from being a serious movie.

I didn't take it as a comedy. But not stalwart drama either. So maybe my point is off. I never read the manga or watched the anime.

Have you watched the movie were that scene was from? Just curious. Jackie Chan does do a lot of drama films as well, but they're only recent.

The movie is fucking hilarious, though Jackie Chan said that if he could direct the film he would've made it more serious.

I think for me I sometimes am not sure if the intent is serious and just not familiar to western viewers vs intended to be comedy. Unlike foreign actors in American films like Jackie Chan in Rush Hour.

I would imagine there are probably some cultural references that are only understood there or by others that who have exposure to their culture, just like in the U.S.

I bet if some Japanese guy saw a Days of Our Lives he would be like, "WTF? Why is everyone overacting? What is with these terrible plot lines?"
I know lol. I can remember watching soaps with my wife when we first got married and was like wtf? Then she watched OG Star Trek with me and was like how is this any different. I was like ..........

I didn't like that adaptation. Ryo Saeba was a lecherous womanizer, but Chan felt uncomfortable playing that role since he thought it made him look bad. He ended up removing that.

Personally, I think Chan was afraid the Hong Kong tabloids would go ham on how he was playing himself.

Just an update. I started the second GTO and it seems to have been quite improvment in terms of acting compared to the first.

Maybe I just watched the wrong show to judge japanese actors or maybe I've just gotten used to the mannerisms and it doesn't come off as strange to me anymore.

I'm a fan of Japanese movies and even own a decent collection, and what TC is saying is facts. Maybe it's the style over there but the acting tends to be over the top (and this can be considered bad or cheesy, especially by Westerners). It's not even like an insulting kind of thing, just an observation.
