Printing the forms off and doing it yourself doesn't.

Well - maybe a dollar for the ink/paper.

At least you didn't claim you can't do basic addition and subtraction.

Learn how to do your own taxes and you'll never have to pay a penny more than it costs to mail it in, or you can just mooch off of someone you know that bought tax software like TurboTax just like I do with my parents.

You go on freefillableforms.com when it opens back up next week and you print (or just use their free service online), most likely a 1040 EZ or 1040A. It gets a bit more complicated when there's deductions and credits involved, but for the most part, you fill in everything from your W-2 and fill a few general lines and then add everything up to figure out your return and then submit for free.

I do taxes for family and friends and each person takes me 10-15 minutes. However, I don't get returns anymore and have to pay and thus my shit has gotten so complicated that I have an accountant friend do it and might even look into more professional shit for this year.

Also forgot to mention that the state part should be on the state finance site and is pretty much just plugging things in from the federal. At least in NY, so ymmv.

I just use the free turbo tax they provide on the IRS site. Then again I don't have much to put on there.

Turbo Tax is free for federal and state. Assuming you just need a basic tax return done and don't have a bunch of extra shit like business taxes to worry about, just do that.

Though for some fucking reason I have to mail a check in to the state for what I owe this year even though I've always been able to have them debit me when I've owed in the past. Now I gotta go get checks made. I didn't even need a check to buy my house :(

Only for simple returns it's free. Others it's P expensive compared to other 3rd party software.

To me it sounds like the TC is doing his taxes for the first time. So I'm guessing all he needs is the basics so turbo tax should be fine.
