The stock market is doing. And what's more, the people who DO consider the stock market to be a big issue tend to be people who always vote Republican anyway.

Don't tell the cultists though, they might cry when they realize the DOW being high isn't enough to protect Republicans from devastating losses in 2018 and 2020.

That has nothing to do with anything.

The vast majority, really? Who would that be? Children and welfare rats that don't work? Because from my experience, it's a standard at most jobs now. You just get it as a benefit, so most working people should have them.

So 65% of people doesnt have much of a stake in the future of this country because if these companies do well, then we do well. Do you think its a coincidence unemployment numbers are so low right now? Through stocks, these companies have the capital to hire more, its all related.

So only 35% have any sort of money invested in the stock market including retirement accounts like 401Ks and IRAs?

That's just sad if true, and I can't say I have a lot of sympathy for the 65% that won't even open an IRA and put a little in.

A lot more places tend to offer it as a benefit (I could have had one at Dollar General) but it's completely voluntary. I don't think employers can force you to participate.

And considering an unfortunately high amount of people care more about having money right now, they likely don't want to set aside 50 bucks from their check each week just so Future Them can be happy.

Edit: and they might be skeptical that all their savings will go away if the economy tanks again.

America doesnt have a culture of saving. Look at immigrant groups, they come here with hardly any capital but they generally end up accumulating more wealth than an average American over their lifetime. Is that coincidence? Obviously not, they spent their money intelligently and wisely always thinking about their financial future. But having a culture that doesnt put enough significance on the future or savings, and add to that most people are financially illiterate, you have these results

Eh, they can afford to, they just don't want to make the sacrifice.

I've been employed for a bit over ten years now. Got my first job at 15. My savings account almost never crossed $250 (except for tax return time but it didn't last long) because I just blew all my money on shit I wanted instead of saving it.

About five years ago I finally decided to stop buying video games every other week, get my groceries from Aldi, and go out less. It sucked but now I'm back to being able to do shit when I want to while owning a house, a decent car I that I got brand new, having a slowly growing 401(k), and an emergency fund.

I know, people who literally have no income can't exactly sacrifice to save money, but a ton of people can. They just won't.

Yes, why are so many people shocked about this? A lot of younger people can't afford to spare a few extra dollars a week for "future them" , and many more simply don't care to.
