For me, in the early 2000s I had maybe just discovered Linkin Park in my middle school years, and like many other middle schoolers listened to them religiously... I suppose that was the gateway band that led me to metal later in life (and to this day).

The early 2000s were definitely a good time for moderately successful metal bands. Not talking about mainstream metal, but the kind of bands you'd see in metal magazines or the occasional episode of Headbanger's Ball. Mastodon, Opeth, Nevermore, etc.
