I mean, there's only so many big-name game characters that can be added for hype, and a good many of them are already in the game.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the likes of Goku, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Astroboy, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Harry Potter, Homer Simpson, and Sailor Moon join the roster in some future Smash game.

They could add Birdo, Captain Rainbow, Waluigi, Rex, Black Shadow, Impa, Girahim, Kranky Kong, the crocodile dude from Donkey Kong, Shadow, Hawlucha, any other fighters from Punch Out, more Fire Emblem reps like Chrom.

Doom Guy, Duke Nukem, Gex, Banjo and Kazooie, Phoenix Wright, Viewtiful Joe, Travis Touchdown. It would be cool if they got into Smash, but many of their fans would be in their 50's and probably won't care about videogames anymore.

There's a lot of technically third party but still Nintendo exclusives that haven't been represented like Layton and Bravely Default.

Yeah, adding relatively minor Nintendo characters (minor in comparison to the likes of Mario, Link, DK, and Pikachu, that is) is a given, but those characters can't really bring the hype like, say, Sonic, Snake, Mega Man, and Cloud did.
