Good game so far but the music sucks. Also, not having a run button is kinda annoying.

And these enemies are weird as fuck. But cool game so far

It was fun. Kind of a lesser Super Metroid.

I think the more cartoonish monster designs were a mistake though. With Nintendo, everything has to be in full Disney mode.

Zero Mission is better than Fusion, not as good as Super.

I don't hate it, it's just the worst one I've played. A lot of people like it the most, but I had issue with the hand-holding too.

I never played Metroid 1 or 2 though and they're apparently the actual worst ones.

Metroid is way too difficult for me to even begin to enjoy

The first two are more about "getting lost" than "git gud", mostly because the tech wasn't all that great at the time.
The reason everything in the first game looks samey and repetitive, is because it's all samey and repetitive. Each area has about a dozen unique "rooms", cloned and glued together to form shafts and corridors.

Great game, but I do prefer the traditional Metroids for the most part. I appreciate that it does something a bit different with the horror elements / the SA-X. Samus' dialogue is actually tolerable; it gives her a bit of personality without being totally cringe worthy.

I never got the big deal about Fusion telling you where to go.

Metroid games have always been great about funneling you into going the right way without you realizing it, but literally just putting a dot on your map that says "go here" really doesn't undermine what it accomplishes. It's not like there's a floating dude on the screen that tells you which way to go at every fork in the path. It just means you're not going to go in Sector 2 when you're supposed to go to Sector 5.

I don't recall that Fusion even allowed the player to go the "wrong" way, apart from that one sequence break that needs about ten minutes of continuous shinesparking - and specifically tells you to go back to the rails at the end anyway.

For sure. I don't know if you played 2 but SR is structured the same way, you can only advance to the next area once you kill so many metroids. It's a remake after all. However the areas are huge, you can backtrack to previous areas via warp points, and other than knowing your next entry point for a new area there's zero hand holding.

Sure it did, in some small manner. Just like every other Metroid game. For example in Sector... 4? (The water one) where you can take that path above the big room which leads to a dead end after a few screens. There's a power up in there but you have to have I think the super missiles to get it.

I guess if what you mean is that you can't fight the Nightmare before the first boss, you got me there.

And, much like RoS, it usually doesn't care if you abandon the plot and scrounge around for missed pickups in prior areas. Hell, it even has fast-travel points this time.

The only real flaw SR has, is over-leveraging the melee-slap. Mercury Steam is way less sloppy with this game than they were with Mirror of Fate.

The thing with Fusion is that it doesn't just nudge you in the right direction, but it actively does pretty much everything in its power to stop you going out of sequence. Areas are artificially blocked off (as in, you can't get through even with the right power-up). Many crucial power-ups must be "downloaded" and the downloads are adjusted behind the scenes if you somehow get a power-up you're not supposed to.

I still love the game, but the original, Super, Zero Mission and Prime are undeniably more open at the very least. Not all the sequence breaks are intentional of course, but they're there, and when you do pull them off, the games generally roll with it. Not so in Fusion.

Any version of Prime after the initial NA pressing screws over sequence breaks hard. Even if you do manage to get past the "fixes" that attempt to make the tricky jumps impossible, you'll find that doors are hard-locked, or there's an invisible wall, until you're supposed to do whatever you're attempting.

Yeah, I have the PAL version, unfortunately. Even then, it's still way more open than Fusion. There are ways around some of the changes; things are just more difficult (e.g. the initial scan-dash to get the Space Jump). It does suck though.

At the very least, Nintendo seems to have learned its lesson from Other M, where the perfectly reasonable action of running back to a known save-point, completely screws up the game.
http://metroid.wikia.com/wiki/Pyrosphere_door_glitch

Blatantly railroaded Metroid games may well be a thing of the past. SR is linear because it's a remake of a linear game, but it doesn't really push "foreward only" outside of a few small sections.

I loved Fusion for being exactly what it set out to be: an upending of the serie's tropes up to that point. Not that I didn't love said tropes of course, Super is one of my all-time top games. But in a bizarre way, Fusion rewards you for being a series fan by constanting knowing what your expections are and turning them upside down. But while this made for an exceptionally fun first playthough, it does inevitably kill replay value, since a lot of the big moments have a kind of shock value to them.

I'm also in the minority in that I found Zero Mission to be thoroughly forgettable. And I hated the zero suit ending segment.. I mean, I certainly can't claim that Samus wasn't sexualized prior to this game, considering that the main perk of beating Super in under 3 hours was that you got to see her in a bikini. But it feels like after ZM, people gravitate towards slinky Zero Suit Samus over old badass-suit Samus when they think of the character.

I love Fusion. It holds your hand but I love the story and narrative, and it's actually pretty damn scary for a GBA game. I ended up replaying it more than Super, but Super's still a damn fine game. Zero Mission is one of my favorites because the controls are so responsive, fast, and tight, and I enjoyed Samus Returns a lot.
